FLAG FOOTBALL - Nuneaton pupil crowned European champion with Great Britain

A SCHOOL in Nuneaton is celebrating after one of its pupils returned home as a European champion, after representing Great Britain on the international stage.

Etone College pupil Izzie McNeal won European glory with Great Britain. s

Etone College pupil Izzie McNeal earned a place in Great Britain’s under-17 girls’ flag football team to compete at the IFAF European Youth Flag Football Championships, held in Italy.

McNeal, who also plays locally for the Nuneaton Jaguars, formed part of a Great Britain side who finished the competition unbeaten.

Great Britain opened their campaign with victories against Finland, Germany and Austria before progressing to the knockout stages.

A dramatic semi-final saw GB defeat Spain 19-18 to book their place in the European final.

The team saved one of their strongest performances for the biggest stage, beating Germany 33-7 in the final to secure the European Championship and bring the gold medal back to Great Britain.

For McNeal, the achievement represents the culmination of a huge amount of commitment to the sport, balancing her education with the training and dedication required to compete at international level.

Headteacher at Etone College, Mr Smith said: “We are incredibly proud of Izzie and everything she has achieved.

“To represent Great Britain is a fantastic accomplishment in itself, but to return as a European champion is something truly special.

“Izzie’s success reflects the commitment, resilience and teamwork she demonstrates, and these are qualities we work hard to develop in all of our pupils at Etone.

“She has represented herself, her team, her school and the wider Nuneaton community brilliantly, and I know everyone at Etone will join me in congratulating her on this outstanding achievement.”

McNeal proved one of four Nuneaton Jaguars players selected for the Great Britain under-17 girls squad, alongside Francesca Taylor, Ianthe Standing and Emily Challinor.

Flag football, the fast-growing form of American football will also make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
