Burnley will not be able to escape the bottom three this weekend but could set up an opportunity next time out when they visit Cardiff on Saturday (15:00 GMT).
The Clarets have taken two draws for an undefeated start under new boss Fabio Celestini so far but a first victory on the weekend may give them the platform they need to really get his tenure going.
It would guarantee the side a chance at safety next time round, leaving newly promoted Cardiff City just two points ahead.
Cardiff are winless in their last nine league games against Burnley (D4 L5), since a 4-0 home win in October 2012.
Burnley have won five of their last six league games against Cardiff (D1), more than they had in their previous 23 (W4 D11 L8).
Cardiff lost 2-1 the last time they hosted Burnley in March 2025, but they haven't lost consecutive home league games against the Clarets since April 1977.
Burnley have won just two of their last 43 league games (D16 L25), the fewest of any side in England's top four tiers since the start of November 2025. Both victories in that time have come away from home, however.
Burnley striker Jamie Vardy has never scored in five league appearances against Cardiff – no side has he faced more in England's top four tiers without scoring (also 5 vs Brentford).
