December's blockbuster fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua is at risk of being cancelled, according to a former world heavyweight champion.
The two flag bearers for British boxing over the past decade are set to face off against each other in the ring on the 11th of December, with Cardiff's Principality Stadium set to host one of the biggest fights the country has ever seen, and the tale of the tape shows how the pair measure up.
Promoters for both men have tried for years to put the bout together, but have ultimately failed to get the fight over the line. The wait appeared to be over when streaming giant Netflix got involved earlier this year, although there was still a brief period in September where the fight was seemingly on the verge of falling apart.
That issue was ultimately resolved, but now former WBC World Heavyweight Champion Frank Bruno has cast fresh doubt on the clash after sharing a recent conversation he had while in a boxing gym.
In a discussion with Tony Bellew on Fight Your Corner, Bruno raised the possibility of an injury, prompting fresh questions over whether The Gypsy King will be ready to face Joshua.
"I looked at him the other day and I think someone was talking to me in the gym that he’s got some injury, which may stop him from going into the fight with Anthony Joshua? And having that on your head ain’t nice," he said.
Bellew responded coyly, claiming that Fury "plays up to the camera."
"I do think Tyson Fury is the master of the mind games. He's going to be saying things. Yeah, he’s very, very good at it. Very, very good at the mind games."
Continuing on the path of Fury's mind games and pre-match antics, Bruno said: "I see him at the press conferences and he really says crazy things that get right under your skin.
"Very controversial what he says, and no one’s ever going to agree with everything he says, but one thing that we can all agree on is he’s a world-class fighter. Yeah, he’s a brilliant boxer. Very, very good. I mean, it’s abnormal that he can move the way he moves at 20 stone."
The pair then went on to talk about Joshua's chances of beating the former two-time heavyweight world champion, with Bruno claiming: "He’s got a puncher's chance against Fury, but Fury is a very difficult guy."
Bellew replied: "You’ve summed it up perfectly. I think that AJ doesn’t win this fight on points. He can only win it by knockout. And I think Tyson Fury is a very good boxer, but he’s shown vulnerabilities and he’s only getting at this age and at this part of your career, you’re not getting quicker. You’re only getting slower."
Fury is currently in camp for the fight, training alongside the likes of Joe Joyce and Jarrell Miller. He has yet to address Bruno's claims.
