Why DK Metcalf holds the key to unlocking Pittsburgh's offense

Head coach Mike McCarthy must target receiver DK Metcalf early to stretch defenses downfield and unlock Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers offense.

Through the early stages of the season, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy’s offensive script relied heavily on safe, horizontal throws. However, starting games with short screen passes has proven to be a dead end. The Steelers offense simply cannot function effectively until they force defenses to respect the vertical threat of wide receiver DK Metcalf.

According to Steelers reporter Christopher Carter on his “Locked on Steelers” podcast, the dynamic was fully on display in Pittsburgh's recent outing. The offense limped through the early quarters with short pass attempts that generated little rhythm. The turning point arrived only after Aaron Rodgers began taking aggressive downfield shots to Metcalf, stretching the field and opening up space for the rest of the unit.

"Nothing in this offense worked until they threw the ball down the field first in this game," noted Carter. "Once they started throwing down the field first, then everything else followed."

Guest and fellow reporter Alan Saunders pointed out that Rodgers acknowledged this shift postgame.

"Aaron said it in his postgame press conference: 'As soon as we got DK going, everything else followed from that.' Well, he's the only downfield guy you got right now, can't start the game throwing 10 screens," added Saunders.

Saunders also highlighted McCarthy’s rare admission regarding the initial game plan against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Mike McCarthy came about as close to as I've seen him basically say like, 'Man, we screwed that up today. Yeah, like what we put into that, we're not getting out of it.'"

With a banged-up receiving corps, attempting to establish the run or set up short completions without first throwing deep is a losing proposition. Setting the tone with Metcalf downfield isn't just an option, it is the mandate required to unlock Pittsburgh’s entire offense.
