York City's impressive League Two start no surprise

Ex-Rotherham United forward Conor Washington said he is "not massively surprised" by York's performances following their promotion from the National League.

Mr Washington said: "I think York have been really impressive, but I'm not massively surprised.

"I think people underestimate just how strong the National League is now.

"There are some big clubs, good players, and significant budgets, and it's an incredibly difficult league to get out of."

Drawing on his own experience of promotion with Newport County, Mr Washington argued that the jump between the two divisions is not as big as people sometimes make out.

He said: "I don't think the jump is as big as people sometimes make out.

"You're obviously playing against good players more consistently, and mistakes get punished more often, but there are plenty of National League players who are more than capable of playing in the Football League.

"York have spent a season winning games, and they've carried that confidence into League Two."

He also believes that the current promotion system is outdated.

He added: "Personally, I don't think the two-up, two-down system makes a lot of sense anymore.

"When you look at how competitive the promoted teams have been in League Two, I think there's a really strong argument for a third promotion place.

"You can have a brilliant season in the National League, finish second with 90 or 100 points, and still miss out."
