Scotland hero raves about Melissa Andreatta as World Cup dream nears

McGovern was on the scoresheet as Scotland set up a play-off final against Sweden – who battered Lithuania 15-0 – with the first leg next month before the return leg at the start of December.

And she has insisted that despite the heavyweight tag the Swedes carry that Scotland will approach the game with the conviction that they can qualify for their first World Cup since 2019.

“We can absolutely do it,” she said. “We have the players in that dressing room to do it, and world-class players at that. No matter the situation we will be ready.

“We don’t focus on outside noise. We just focus on ourselves and keep going. Mel [Andreatta] gives us that motivation and she is so encouraging.”

Scotland had to twice come from behind against the Czechs in Paisley last night before winning the game 3-2 to take a 5-2 aggregate win. With nothing to lose, the Czechs went for it before Scotland took control of the tie in the second period. McGovern has thanked the supporters who turned out at the Marbill Coaches stadium to help get them over the line.

“The crowd was excellent and they pushed us on,” she said. “We could feel them singing and it spurred us on tonight. I was delighted with how the result went. I love playing for my country and I think you could see that with my celebration at the end. I will do anything to score goals for my country and this team.

“It is back to club action for a lot of us now but the game will be at the forefront of our minds. I will go back and focus on keeping myself fit and keeping myself in a good place and that will be the same for the other girls. We will be ready come Sweden.

“Going behind, we had to show a bit of resilience to go and get ourselves back into the game.  We have the belief that we keep going. We have the right characters in there.

“Mel shows that belief in us and we just keep going. We knew the Czechs would be aggressive and physical and we tried to match that.”
