PGA Tour star looks on the bright side despite brutal playoff defeat that prolongs agonizing wait
Seamus Power looks on

Seamus Power saw silver-lined clouds after his brutal playoff defeat to Austin Smotherman at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

The tournament was shortened to three rounds and went to a Monday finish after Sunday's play was canceled due to high winds at Port Royal, and Smotherman triumphed on the third playoff hole beneath moody skies to secure his second victory in four weeks.

For Power, it is four years since he last tasted victory on the PGA Tour, but Smotherman has enjoyed a life-changing month, finally winning in his 100th start on tour at the Bank of Utah Championship before securing a long and lucrative future on the PGA Tour with this $1.1 million victory.

Smotherman is exempt through 2029, meaning he is guaranteed to play two full seasons on the PGA Tour's big-money Championship Series when it debuts in 2028.

Power does not have the same kind of job security, but the Irishman effectively secured his PGA Tour status for 2027 with his second-place finish in Bermuda, a place where he has fond memories after winning this tournament in 2022.

Although he could not replicate that victory on Monday, the 39-year-old is looking ahead with optimism after an agonizing near miss.

"I absolutely love coming here; it's amazing. Obviously, the weather was kind of unfortunate yesterday. Had a chance this morning, wasn't able to do it, which is disappointing," he said.

But overall, a great week; can't complain too much. Hit some good shots in the playoff, just didn't quite judge the wind right, but that's golf sometimes. I'll move onwards. A lot of positives from the week."

Smotherman and Power both parred the par-three 16th hole twice to start Monday's playoff. But after a new hole location was cut, two-time PGA Tour winner Power could only make a bogey, and Smotherman holed a devilish three-footer in blustery conditions to take the win.

Power's disappointment was outweighed by the relief that he will have full-time status on tour next season after spending this year without certainty on when and where he could play. He jumped 35 places to 68th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, assuring him of a place in the top 100 by the end of the year.

"It gets me back to full status again, which was frustrating this year playing, not really knowing when you're in, when you're not in. That's nice," he added.

"That was a big goal for the fall, to get a top-100 locked up. Now I'll have a look at the list and see if I can maybe move into that top-60 or 70, whatever that cutoff is for the first couple of elevated events [next year].

"But really big strides for me forward in the fall. Three events, two top-10s, almost winning here, so a lot of good stuff."
