Former MLB star and 2017 World Series champion with the Astros, Cameron Maybin, shared his unpopular opinion that he would love to see Yankees skipper Aaron Boone take the managerial reins of the San Diego Padres when his tenure in the Bronx ends. Maybin shared his opinion in a social media post on X.

“Having played for Boone, I can tell you what fans don’t always see. He’s an ELITE communicator, holds guys accountable behind closed doors without embarrassing them publicly, and makes players believe in themselves even when nobody else does… Boone is a tremendous leader of MEN, and I truly believe Padres players and fans would LOVE and APPRECIATE what he brings to that clubhouse,” Maybin wrote on X.

Since then, baseball fans, especially those in San Diego, have shared candid reactions on social media to Maybin’s blunt take on Boone potentially becoming the NL West club’s skipper in the near future.

“I think the Padres have suffered enough trauma,” one fan commented.

Soon after the Bombers’ postseason run ended with an embarrassing ALDS sweep by the Rays, the franchise announced it would retain skipper Boone next year, which will be his 10th year at the helm and the final guaranteed year of his current two-year, $10.5 million contract signed in February 2025.

As for the Padres, the team signed current manager Craig Stammen to a three-year contract in November 2025. In his first season in charge of the ballclub, San Diego finished the regular season 91-71, swept the Cubs in the NLWCS, but lost 3-1 in the best-of-five NLDS to the Brewers.

It remains highly unlikely the team will make a managerial change this offseason, even as President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller held the end-of-season press conference and highlighted key areas for development ahead of the 2027 campaign.

Padres’ Executive Highlighted One Key “Area of Need” This Offseason

In the end-of-season presser he addressed via Zoom, Preller reflected on multiple facets of the game, key takeaways from the 2026 campaign, and the franchise’s outlook heading into 2027. Furthermore, Preller bluntly identified one key area of need this offseason.

“The core foundation, in terms of the position-player group and the bullpen, is there… Starting pitching is a clear area of need,” Preller said.

Concerns about the pitching rotation are understandable, as Randy Vasquez is one of the few pitchers guaranteed for next year. Ace Michael King is expected to opt out this offseason, while veteran Nick Pivetta has a club option next year. Both Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish continue to work through their rehab and recovery phase.

Furthermore, most of the pitchers acquired ahead of the midseason trade deadline, including Casey Mize, Robbie Ray, Walker Buehler, and Lucas Giolito, have hit free agency or are heading toward it. Therefore, it will be interesting to see what the Padres acquire in the offseason to bolster their starting rotation.
