Lancashire decided not to offer England great James Anderson a new contract for the 2027 season. According to The Times, Anderson was informed of the decision by the club’s new management on Monday, despite taking 50 wickets in the County Championship this season.

Anderson continued playing for the club after England ended his international career in 2024. He captained Lancashire in 2026, but the team endured a difficult season, finishing seventh in Division Two. They also failed to reach the knockout stages of either white-ball competition.

Lancashire Decide Against Offering James Anderson A New Contract

According to The Times, Lancashire chief executive Richard Kenyon and director of cricket Paul Farbrace met James Anderson on Monday and told him he would not receive a contract for the 2027 summer. The club has declined to comment on the reports, while Anderson is yet to announce his retirement.

Lancashire finished seventh in Division Two, their lowest position in the County Championship’s history. The disappointing campaign followed chief executive Daniel Gidney announcing his departure and Mark Chilton losing his role as director of cricket.

Kenyon, who joined from Nottinghamshire, took over as chief executive and appointed Farbrace as director of cricket as part of a wider review of the club’s cricket operations.

Despite the team’s struggles, Anderson remained among Lancashire’s leading performers. He claimed 50 Championship wickets at an average of 17.68 in 2026, finishing as the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Division Two. He was reportedly keen to continue playing for the county in 2027.

England Ended James Anderson’s International Career In 2024

England ended Anderson’s international career in 2024. Coach Brendon McCullum, captain Ben Stokes and director of cricket Rob Key wanted to refresh the pace attack ahead of the 2025-26 Ashes series in Australia, which England lost 4-1.

Anderson played his 188th and final Test against the West Indies at Lord’s in July 2024. However, he continued playing for Lancashire and briefly worked as England’s bowling consultant.

In 2025, Anderson signed a new deal with Lancashire and suggested he could continue playing county cricket for another three seasons. He had also captained the team during the second half of the 2025 season before taking over the role full-time in 2026.

Although injuries limited him to six County Championship appearances in 2025, he continued playing in the T20 Blast and The Hundred. He managed 11 of Lancashire’s 14 possible Championship matches in 2026, despite having to manage a calf injury.

James Anderson’s Legendary Career In Numbers

James Anderson made his first-team debut for Lancashire in 2001 after representing the Lancashire Cricket Board as a teenager in 2000. He claimed 443 of his 1,193 first-class wickets for Lancashire, along with 83 List A wickets and 50 T20 wickets for the county.

For England, Anderson took 704 wickets in 188 Test matches at an average of 26.45. He remains the third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, behind spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne, and holds the record for the most Test wickets by a fast bowler.

Anderson is also England’s most-capped Test cricketer and the country’s leading wicket-taker in men’s ODIs, with 269 dismissals. Across international formats, he claimed 991 wickets for England during a career spanning 23 years.

Anderson has yet to confirm whether he will retire or pursue opportunities outside Lancashire. If he does end his playing career, it will bring to a close an extraordinary journey spanning more than two decades at county and international level.
