The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has left Ravindra Jadeja out of both ODI squads for India’s upcoming five-match tour of New Zealand, raising questions about the veteran all-rounder’s place in the team’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Jadeja remains part of India’s Test squad for the New Zealand tour, but his omission from the 50-over format suggests that the selectors are exploring other combinations.

Reasons why Team India selectors dropped Ravindra Jadeja from the ODI squad

1. Axar Patel has strengthened his position

One of the major reasons behind Jadeja’s omission could be the growing competition from Axar Patel. The left-arm spinner offers control with the ball, useful batting contributions and athletic fielding, making him a strong option in India’s ODI combination.

Axar has increasingly become India’s preferred left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder. Washington Sundar also provides an alternative, particularly when the team wants an off-spinner who can contribute with the bat.

With limited places available in the playing XI, the selectors must decide which combination offers the best balance. Jadeja’s experience remains valuable, but it does not automatically guarantee selection when other players can fulfil similar roles.

2. Jadeja’s recent ODI form has raised concerns

Jadeja’s recent performances in ODIs have also come under scrutiny. Although he remains one of India’s most experienced all-rounders, his wicket-taking returns in the format have declined.

Jadeja had taken only five wickets in his previous 10 ODIs before the recently-concluded West Indies series, including just one wicket in his previous seven matches. His recent batting returns have also been modest, with the all-rounder struggling to make a substantial contribution in the lower order.

These numbers do not erase Jadeja’s past achievements, but they highlight why the selectors may want to assess alternative options before the 2027 World Cup.

India need a spinner who can control the middle overs while also providing regular breakthroughs. The team management will be keen to identify the combination that offers the best balance between containing runs and taking wickets.

3. India’s focus is shifting towards the 2027 ODI World Cup

India’s squad decisions are increasingly being viewed through the lens of the 2027 ODI World Cup. With the tournament approaching, the selectors have an opportunity to evaluate younger players and establish a settled combination.

Axar and Washington provide alternatives in the spin-bowling all-rounder role, while Kuldeep Yadav remains an important specialist wicket-taking option.

The decision to leave Jadeja out of the New Zealand ODI squads is significant because he has not been selected for either part of the five-match series. However, the BCCI has not issued a specific public explanation for his omission, so it would be premature to conclude that the veteran has been permanently ruled out of India’s World Cup plans.

4. Jadeja still has a role in Test cricket

Despite his ODI omission, Jadeja has retained his place in India’s Test squad for the New Zealand tour. His ability to bowl long spells, contribute valuable runs and provide exceptional fielding makes him a useful option in the longest format.

The distinction between his selection in Tests and omission from ODIs suggests that the selectors are assessing his suitability according to format-specific requirements rather than ending his international career.

Jadeja’s experience could still prove important in red-ball cricket, particularly during demanding overseas assignments.
