Curry endured a nightmare spell on the sidelines following the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
The England international underwent major hip surgery in February 2024 after suffering serious damage to the joint.
Doctors warned him that his rugby career could be over.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Curry revealed the devastating impact of that news.
He admitted the prospect of retirement made him "curl up into a ball and cry".
Curry eventually returned to action in June 2024, just four months after surgery.
He went on to regain his England place and played a key role in the British & Irish Lions' 2025 series victory over Australia.
However, his latest injury has brought fresh concerns over his fitness.
There is currently no confirmation that the new injury is connected to his previous hip problem.
Curry's absence is another headache for Borthwick, who has already been forced into several changes ahead of the November internationals.
Alex Mitchell has also been ruled out of the autumn campaign, while Guy Pepper and Sam Underhill are unavailable through injury.
The England boss has turned to Curry's twin brother Ben, who will start at openside flanker against Australia.
It will be Ben's first Test appearance since July 2025.
Meanwhile, Northampton Saints youngster Henry Pollock has been named among the replacements.
Exeter Chiefs forward Greg Fisilau could also make his international debut from the bench.
Borthwick has already lost Chandler Cunningham-South, who faces two months on the sidelines following ankle surgery.
With Japan and New Zealand still to come this month, England can ill afford to lose another experienced forward.
For Curry, the immediate priority will be discovering the full extent of his latest injury.
Until then, his return date remains unclear.
