Nakamura, Maghsoodloo, Movahed Take 3 0 Thursday Titles

GMs Hikaru Nakamura and Parham Maghsoodloo both continued their recent 3 0 Thursday successes on November 5, winning the first two tournaments. GM Sina Movahed joined them by winning the third tournament, his first victory since March 19. Meanwhile, WFM Veronika Shubenkova took the top women's prize in the first tournament with seven points, her fifth such victory in 3 0 Thursdays. IM Nurgyul Salimova took the women's prize in the second and third tournaments with six and seven points, respectively.

First Tournament: Nakamura Undefeated

Nakamura streamed his way to victory in the first tournament of the day, confidently winning his first eight games. In the sixth round, he scored a convincing attacking victory against GM Ian Nepomniachtchi.

His toughest test came in the eighth round against GM Magnus Carlsen, who had won six in a row after missing the opening round of the tournament. Nakamura won in a queen and rook endgame, later recording an analysis for his fans.

With a lead on the field, Nakamura was able to cruise to victory, drawing two of his remaining three games and winning the event with 10 points. GM Haik Martirosyan took second place with nine points, ahead of IM Matvey Galchenko on tiebreaks.

Second Tournament: Maghsoodloo Continues Great Form

Maghsoodloo won four 3 0 Thursday Tournaments in October. He continued November right where he left off, taking clear first in the second tournament of the day. He won his first six games, including a messy GOAT Horns Variation battle against GM Nodirbek Yakubboev in the third round.

Now in the clear lead, Maghsoodloo allowed a draw with Nepomniachtchi in the seventh round. That gave him 6.5/7 entering the next game with Black against GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

After a draw with GM Jose Martinez in the ninth round, Maghsoodloo faced Nakamura, who was gunning for a second consecutive tournament victory. That game ended in a draw by repetition, allowing Maghsoodloo to maintain the lead. In the final round, he secured victory with a decisive win against IM Reza Mahdavi. That brought Maghsoodloo to 9.5 points, ahead of Vachier-Lagrave and GM Jules Moussard, who had nine points each.

Third Tournament: Movahed In Clear First

In the third tournament, Movahed won his first three games. The third was a crushing attack against Moussard.

After a fourth round loss to GM Ray Robson, Movahed got back on track with three consecutive wins. The critical game of the tournament was his ninth-round battle with GM Arjun Erigaisi. Last month, Arjun won a complicated King's Indian Defense to take a 3 0 Thursday ahead of Movahed. This time, Movahed got in trouble, but escaped amid a torrent of complications.

That win gave Movahed 7.5/9, and he finished strong to take sole first place with nine points. For the second time in the day, Martirosyan took second place, this time with 8.5 points. Robson claimed third with eight points.
