Philippe Clement under pressure as Norwich woes continue

I don't think Philippe Clement is any different  - he is under pressure.

I wouldn't say he's under pressure from the people above at this moment in time - I think he's under pressure from the supporters because they're not happy with what's been served up, especially because of the expectation at the start of the summer - and rightly so.

He needs to turn things around and the players need to turn things around ASAP because this can't carry on - 10 games gone and City are one point above the relegation zone. Never in a million years did I think I'd be saying that at the start of the season.

They’re 14 points behind Swansea who are top and 12 behind Middlesbrough so those automatic promotions places already look beyond them.

It was around this time last year that Norwich lost six league games on the spin, took two points from 10 league games and Liam Manning got the sack.

If the current run carries on the pressure is only going to get worse, the noise is only going to get louder. He knows, he’s not stupid - if the team carries on losing games, then I think action will be taken - but at the minute I think he's got enough credit in the bank from what he did last year.

They were relegation fodder, second from bottom, when he took over – and they finished ninth.

I think he did enough last season when the club really needed it to be given a bit more time.

Reading social media after the defeat at home to Southampton on Wednesday and quite a few Norwich supporters were saying they'd had enough and they think it's time for the change.

I don't - but he needs to sort it out.

Defensively, they are all over the shop - and you can only keep saying that for so long. It should have been addressed weeks ago anyway.

The first goal in the 2-1 defeat at Swansea, you've got one defender, Darlin Yongwa, in the ar a. Where’s the centre-half? Jose Cordoba was at right back! He's had a long summer with the World Cup and a lot of good things have been said about him – maybe it’s gone to his head.

For Southampton’s goal on Wednesday, I think Dan Grimshaw's got to do better with the first shot – it didn’t have a lot of power but he should just pushed it away for a corner. Then you reset and defend the corner. But he doesn't clear it properly. He makes a terrific save from the second shot to be fair, but Kuryu Matsuki follows up. It's another avoidable goal.

Going back to Swansea - they've had a great start thanks to a really good summer window and people are saying now Norwich should have brought more players in the summer.

I don't think too many people were saying this squad needed major surgery because it didn't - maybe bring one or two in just to help strengthen what's already there, but no one was saying wholesale change.

 Mitigation?

Maybe the current injuries provide some mitigation for Clement who is missing Kenny McLean, Mo Toure and keeper Vladan Kovacevic, who missed Wednesday and looks likely to miss the Portsmouth visit on Saturday.

I've stuck up for the goalkeeper - obviously he is the number one, but you can't keep conceding the amount of goals they have without maybe trying something different.

Kenny is your leader, your captain, a big influence on and off the pitch – but you have to say Jacob Wright's come in and done well to be fair.

Toure is a massive miss. And I think that's the problem that Philippe Clement's got – he has someone in Jovon Makama who is perfect to take his place. But Makama missed a lot of pre-season and when that happens, even if it's only three or four days, you're always playing catch-up.

In an ideal situation he would have started against Southampton. But they don't want a repeat of what happened last season when they lost him and then lost Toure and they only had the one recognised centre forward for three or four weeks.

But I think we’re at the stage now where you've got to start him. Is it a risk? Life's a risk. It's a risk crossing the road, it's a risk me walking into the city.

Makama came on against Southampton and caused problems – he has power, strength and pace and he chases after everything.

Do it for Michael

It will be a very emotional day at Carrow Road on Saturday as the club pays tribute to Michael Wynn Jones.

For me, personally, if I was playing that would add motivation to me, that would make me even more determined.

Do it for him.

That would be the best tribute that they could pay Michael.

I hope there is an experienced voice in the Norwich dressing room who tells the players – if they need telling – that they need to win this game for a really special man.
