"When you sign for Barça, you arrive in Barcelona and it is the only place where you arrive and have nothing to do. In reality, they already have the blueprint; they already execute it. You don't need to tell them 'no, listen, play shorter, don't push forward, pass here, combine, draw the opponent into this area'," recalled Quique Setién during an appearance on the 'Quien Marca Gana' podcast.
Setién also acknowledged that not every player truly grasps the game. "I've had 80 million euro players who don't understand it. I remember one of them at Barcelona. I would sit down with him and go through match footage," he revealed.
During his spell at Camp Nou, an impassioned touchline outburst by his assistant, Eder Sarabia, went viral during a 'Clásico'. "He isn't doing anything he's supposed to do, all of a sudden he starts dribbling and shooting when he should be moving the ball around, damn it!" Sarabia fumed at the time. Setién conceded that the episode disrupted the dressing room: "It's true that sometimes inexperience and temperament lead you into situations you can't control, where you don't realise where you are."
The veteran tactician also revealed he was on the verge of heading to Egypt before committing to FC Barcelona. "A club offered me an astronomical amount of money. I called home to say, 'We're going to Egypt until the end of the season'. The team was eighth and we had to qualify for the Champions League. We already had a plane ready, the contract was drawn up. And then, I got a call: 'Don't go to Egypt because you could sign for Barcelona'. But what have I done to sign for Barcelona?" he recalled asking himself. Just three days later, he put pen to paper with the Catalan giants.
