Wiveliscombe firsts secure 41-24 league win over Teignmouth

The victory in Devon came in the club’s sixth Regional Two South West League fixture of the season.

Tiegnmouth are now in the bottom two after the result, while Wiveliscombe moved into seventh place.

The home side won the line-outs during the first 45 minutes, but Wiveliscombe’s scrum had the stronger performance.

Fly-half Olly Standbury opened the scoring with a penalty to put the visitors 3-0 ahead.

After 15 minutes, scrum-half Richard Baker broke through the Tiegnmouth defence and sprinted in for Wiveliscombe’s first try.

Standbury converted, making it 10-0.

Tiegnmouth then built pressure near the Wiveliscombe try line, and second-row Jack Bowen scored their first try.

Wiveliscombe responded when their scrum pushed the home side over its own try line, leading to a penalty try and a 17-5 advantage.

Tiegnmouth scored again shortly before half-time, reducing the gap to five points at 17-12.

Wiveliscombe were reduced to 12 players at one stage in the second half, but still kept control of the match.

The hosts did not take the lead, while the visitors added four more tries.

Baker scored again after proving too quick for the home defence. Full-back Dan Rottenbury crossed for two tries, and left wing Arthur Irvine completed a good three-quarter move with another try.

Standbury added two conversions.

Tiegnmouth continued to create opportunities.

Bowen scored his second try, while number eight Peter Billham crossed for their fourth.

Full-back Tom Carr converted one of the tries, leaving the final score at 41-24 for the visitors.

However, Wiveliscombe’s second XV suffered a 61-21 defeat away to Wyvern in Counties Three Somerset South.

The teams travelled to Taunton for the fixture, with Wyvern third in the table and Wiveliscombe ninth.

Dewi Price scored two tries for Wiveliscombe, while centre Dean Rawles added one. Cameron Palk converted three times.

The first XV will play Nailsea & Backwell at home on Saturday, November 14, with the second XV set to host Hornets thirds in a league match on Saturday, November 7.

Finally, Wiveliscombe RFC have sent condolences to Madeline, Zoé and the family of Colin Mogford, who died after a short illness.

Mogford had been involved with Wiveliscombe Rugby from his teenage years.

He had played for the club, served as a committee member and later became chairman.

The club said he was a friend to all and would be greatly missed.
