Premier League fans will be concerned to learn that at least one fixture is at risk of being postponed this weekend. The game in question involves Liverpool, who host Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield on Sunday (25).
There is plenty of intrigue ahead of the game as both teams sit near the top of the table. Under new manager Andoni Iraola, the Reds have made a solid start to the campaign and sit fifth, with just one defeat from their opening seven league outings.
Brighton, meanwhile, are perhaps the story of the season so far. The Seagulls are currenlty third, with five wins, one draw and one loss. They thumped rivals Crystal Palace 5-0 in their last outing, and have also beaten reigning champions Arsenal 3-0.
There are real concerns, though, that the two teams won't get to play in the Premier League this weekend.
The issue is related to expected bad weather across the United Kingdom this weekend. In particular, the possible impact of Storm Boelo could cause real issues. With that in mind, the Met Office have since issued a yellow weather warning in Merseyside for Saturday and Sunday as gusts of 70 to 80mph are likely.
With the game set to take place at Anfield, there are genuine concerns that Liverpool vs Brighton will be postponed too. A Met Office statement warned:
“Strong winds will spread across northern parts of the UK during Saturday afternoon, combining with spells of heavy rain.
“Initially strong southerly winds will affect parts of Scotland before more widespread and even stronger westerly winds develop later on Saturday. Very windy conditions will then persist overnight and through much of Sunday before gradually easing from the southwest later.
“Gusts of 55-65 mph are likely widely with some coastal and exposed areas potentially seeing gusts of 70-80 mph or more, these strongest gusts most likely across Scotland and the far north of England.”
As per The Standard, it's expected that the game, for now, will go ahead. However, should conditions get too bad, the local Safety Advisory Group will be involved in any decision to potentially call the game off.
That group includes officials both Liverpool and Brighton, as well as representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council as the safety of travelling supporters will be the key concern, as road and rail networks are likely to face disruption.
While Storm Boelo could cause trouble for that game, Storm Austen is already causing chaos across the UK. As per BBC, the bad weather has left more than 15,000 homes without power as the storm continues to batter southern England and Wales.
With more bad weather expected this weekend, expect games across the country to be played in testing conditions. If any Premier League matches are postponed, however, it may be difficult to find a new date to reschedule them, with the busy festive period soon to be upon us.
