Assume just incompetence from this journalist on Newcastle United fans and not deliberate untruths

I read with interest these comments from a journalist about the Newcastle United fans.

I only saw the articles today (Thursday 5 November 2026).

It was published on Tuesday, the day after the 1-0 home defeat to Everton.

It was a lengthy article by The Telegraph billed as an ‘Exclusive’, the headline declaring ‘Newcastle players feel hamstrung by poor recruitment’…

The main thrust of the article was that The Telegraph claimed they had sources giving them an inside track regarding certain Newcastle United players, that they weren’t happy with the summer recruitment, nor happy with the tactics used by Matthias Jaissle.

The article was credited to both Matt Law and Luke Edwards of The Telegraph.

I have no idea whether or not this is what certain Newcastle United players have been saying. I am assuming this is the truth and the newspaper had one or more credible source(s) for this.

What I did find unacceptable though, was something else in the article. Well a couple of things.

This was when backing up the unhappiness of the players angle, when talking about the fans.

I am sure this was just incompetence from Luke Edwards, rather than intentional untruths.

Talking about the Everton match he stated:

‘For the first time in years, you could still get tickets for the game on matchday. Newcastle fans are drained and deflated. They are starting to wonder whether this team, playing such ugly and disjointed long-ball football, is still worthy of their passionate and unflinching support.

We have not heard a Newcastle team booed and whistled at St James’ Park since the bleak, dark days of the Steve Bruce era.’

Tickets

The Everton match was exactly the same as normal. All of the normal (non-hospitality) tickets for Newcastle United fans were as usual sold out for this match to members when the ballot sale and queue sale happened. The match by match tickets split over these two routes as is always the case. This happened weeks before the match.

What DOES happen ahead of each home game is that season ticket holders can decide to try and sell their tickets via the club’s official ticketing site to members. This means that even on a matchday there will usually be some tickets available, whether due to illness or whatever reasons, including fans simply deciding they don’t want to go. It obviously varies how many game to game.

Here on The Mag we highlighted how late last season more than a thousand of these tickets were getting put up for resale for certain matches by season ticket holders, such as the Brighton one. Many of them getting bought and/or season ticket holders ending up still going to the match if nobody bought their ticket online.

There has actually been at least one match where there WERE in the past tickets still on sale by the club when it got to matchday AND they didn’t sell out. This was the Champions League home game against Qarabag on 24 February 2026 when the official attendance was 50,068 after United won the first leg 5-1 and the ticket prices had been raised to unreasonable levels.

Boos

The idea that until Monday night a Newcastle United team (and manager) had never been booed by the fans since the days of Steve Bruce is laughable.

I don’t believe in booing the Newcastle United team and/or manager, well not since Steve Bruce anyway….

However, it simply isn’t true that this hasn’t happened before Everton on Monday.

Indeed, if you go back to 28 February 2026, both the Newcastle United team and manager were booed at half-time and full-time against…Everton. Eddie Howe’s side trailing 2-1 at HT and 3-2 at the end.

That came during a period of five defeats in six home Premier League matches. There were certainly plenty of boos for instance in reaction to the 3-2 defeat to Brentford, the 2-1 loss to Bournemouth AND the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland.

There were other previous instances as well, certainly the 4-1 home defeat to Bournemouth I recall in a previous season.

There are a lot of negatives at the moment but best to stick to the facts.
