It was a huge match for Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle at Crystal Palace yesterday.
There again, it feels like every game is a huge one for the Head Coach.
If Matthias Jaissle had been wondering how intense it is to manage in the Premier League, especially at a club such as Newcastle United, then he certainly knows by now!
As well as insisting on United paying the full £9.5m release clause compensation, Al-Ahli had further delayed the impending NUFC appointment by not providing the necessary paperwork in a timely fashion.
As a result, Matthias Jaissle started work with Newcastle United on Wednesday 5 August 2026, precisely 18 days before the new Premier League season kicked off for us against Liverpool.
All of the other 19 Premier League clubs already had their Head Coach/Manager in place, almost all of the rest having a full pre-season to prepare their squads for the 2026-27 campaign. Looking back, the 19th Premier League club to appoint their manager for this season was Fulham, when on 7 July 2026 they put Alvaro Arbeloa in charge at Craven Cottage, more than four weeks before Newcastle United made their appointment.
Before Sunday, Newcastle United had so far played nine matches and won four, drawn two and lost three.
Now it is played ten and won five, drawn two and lost three.
I know this might sound a totally radical suggestion to some Newcastle United fans but…what about giving Matthias Jaissle a bit of a chance?
The over the top vitriol and rubbishing of Matthias Jaissle before that victory at Crystal Palace, was beyond crazy.
Sunday’s victory doesn’t make everything great, it doesn’t prove Matthias Jaissle is 100% the right man for the job long-term., just as before Selhurst Park he wasn’t 100% not the right man for the job long-term.
Surely what all but the most extreme of the NUFC fanbase must now accept is that giving a new manager a proper chance makes sense, especially when so much was stacked against him when he arrived, near impossible circumstances to overcome in the early stages of the season.
Matthias Jaissle finally now getting some semblance of a Newcastle United squad back together, which he hasn’t had since the very opening stage of the season when an undefeated United won three and drew two of his first five matches.
Having a decent number of options available allowed the Head Coach to pick a team and have back up on the bench that allowed NUFC to tough out a difficult first half when the weather (gusting wind) favoured Palace, then come out after the break and blow the opposition away for the next 20+ minutes, before then subs came on and helped ensure the win was seen out.
Even then, Elanga and Ramsey were only under consideration for the bench, whilst Matthias Jaissle was missing Livramento, Jaouen, Fernadez-Pardo and Lewis Miley.
I think for some Newcastle United fans it had (still has?) become a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy when it comes to the new Head Coach and many of the summer signings. Unwilling to give them a chance, these Newcastle United fans now desperate to have themselves proved correct with their snap judgements.
Some Newcastle United fans would still happily see Matthias Jaissle sacked after this win over Crystal Palace. Honestly, we’d be an absolute laughing stock. The media and rival fans would have got exactly what they wanted. Newcastle United sacking a Head Coach before giving him a proper chance and set to become a Spurs or Forest with three or four managers in a season. This after winning five and drawing two of his opening ten matches…
Matthias Jaissle has had to do without the physical presence and leadership of Burn and Joelinton this season, then look back at the opening games and the likes of Osula, Amar Dedic and Elanga excelled before very quickly picking up injuries. Then you had the other injuries on top of that, likes of Ramsey, Tino and so on. It is only now that hopefully United are getting a matchday squad together that offers some options for the starting eleven and will give us a credible bench to call on.
Give Matthias Jaissle the chance to have players on the pitch and a run of matches, that should be the bare minimum he deserves.
