Sunderland move on to the next round of the Carabao Cup after goals from Chemsdine Talbi, Malick Fofana and Timur Tuterov left Brentford unable to complete the comeback.
Regis Le Bris made 10 changes to the team that drew against Leeds United last Sunday.
Talbi started in the 10 tonight, after coming off the bench last weekend to claim his first minutes in the Premier League since opening weekend.
Ukrainian Tuterov got the nod up front after his goal in the Europa League last week against Lech Poznan, and Melker Ellborg got his first start since the last round of the cup.
Melker Ellborg: 5.5
Made some good saves early on, although the Swede was bailed out by Alderete's clearance.
Produced a fabulous save in the 23rd minute to deny Mamadou Sangare.
Ellborg conceded on the stroke of half time, and possibly could have done more to deny Callum Wilson.
Really let himself down in stoppage time, when Igor Thiago's bullet header went straight through the Swedish keeper.
Alan Browne: 6.5
Brought in to do a job by the manager, and did just that.
The weak link in the defence on paper, but the Irishman did enough to keep out Thiago until the very end.
Kevin Danso: 7
Austrian international Danso played a very consistent match, and was instrumental in the last 20 minutes to see Sunderland over the line.
The big centre-half pulled off multiple blocks to deny Thiago, Wilson and Mathias Jensen, among others.
Omar Alderete: 6.5
Great clearance off the line early on to deny Jannik Schuster.
The Paraguayan let himself down for Brentford's opener, as he was caught ball-watching in the box, leaving Schuster wide open to have a pop at goal.
His shot fell to former Newcastle man Wilson, who tapped home to bring his side back into the game.
Dayann Mathalie: 6.5
The Frenchman made some good defensive actions, such as clearing crosses and making tackles.
He also made some good attacking moves on the left-hand side, and combined well with Talbi and Fofana.
Jules Ahoka: 7.5
Showed great composure with the ball to release Ta Bi on the counter for the first goal.
An experienced and controlling performance from the young lad, after being run all over for the first 20 minutes.
Habib Diarra: 5.5
Diarra was taken off at half time, with the reason assumed to be fitness issues.
Diarra has just returned from injury, and although the Senegalese midfielder did not offer too much for Sunderland tonight, the valuable minutes are just what he needed to get back up to playing speed.
Jocelin Ta Bi: 8
Two confirmed assists for Ta Bi tonight, but really he was robbed of an additional goal by Talbi.
The Senegalese winger showed great skill to beat Mame Biram Diouf to put the ball on a plate for Tuterov.
Ta Bi also showed his range of assisting, providing a pinpoint cross to an unmarked Fofana at the back post.
Sunderland's bright spark in attack, and one of the reasons why their fortunes in the first half were changed.
Chemsdine Talbi: 7.5
His press set up the counter for Sunderland's first goal, when the Moroccan forced the mistake that sent Ta Bi running.
Made a lot of good attacking runs and passes. The Moroccan linked the midfield and attack together really well and provided balance to the team.
He poked in Ta Bi's shot on the line. Shameless, but they all count...
Malick Fofana: 6.5
The tricky Belgian had an average outing, being Sunderland's most expensive player on the pitch.
The left winger did get into a good position to get his goal, however Fofana will not have as easy a chance all season.
Timur Tuterov: 7.5
Tuterov was not really involved in the match, but when he was, the Ukrainian made it count.
Tuterov stepped up and took his opportunity, while Wilson Isidor and Brian Brobbey sat out injured.
A really composed finish from the young striker, who must be full of confidence after the run of game time given by Le Bris.
Another young player who showed bags of composure tonight. The 21-year-old did really well to recycle the ball wide to Ta Bi, who went on to cross the ball in for 3-0.
Many strikers would have snatched at the ball with the keeper rushing out, but Tuterov did well to think of the bigger picture.
Chris Rigg: 6.5 (Diarra - 45')
The young English winger was brought on at half time in place of Diarra, and had a good chance on goal early in the second half.
More important minutes in the legs of young Rigg, which is desperately needed at this point in his development.
Thomas Meunier: 5.5 (Tuterov - 60')
Le Bris hinted that Meunier might have been okay to be involved tonight, but it was still a touch-and-go situation.
Good to see that the hamstring injury the Belgian suffered against Brighton has recovered enough to give the Black Cats a boost in squad depth.
Luke O'Nien: 6 (Alderete - 60')
O'Nien played a good half hour of football in place of Alderete, and steadied the ship to see out the result.
Brentford had their chances, but the Englishman's efforts made sure they were to no avail. He stepped up tonight to offer defensive cover in the absence of Daniel Ballard.
Tom Proctor: N/A (Talbi - 80')
Good chance for Proctor to get some minutes against a Premier League side, but he did not play enough to warrant a rating.
Felix Scott: N/A (Ta Bi - 90+4')
Nice to see the youngster get a run out, even if it is just to waste time in the final few minutes.
Two confirmed assists and what should have been a goal for the Senegalese winger tonight, and he is one of the players who has relished the opportunity to show his worth to manager Le Bris.
He showed great skill and vision, having the better of Biram Diouf for the 94 minutes the winger played.
A composed and clinical outing from the Senegalese right winger, something Sunderland have not had for large parts of the season.
One would be shocked if this performance does not earn Ta Bi some minutes in the Premier League.
Every time Ta Bi touched the ball, it looked like something was going to happen, and that is why he is player of the match.
