Michael Carrick praised the performance of Carlos Baleba in Manchester United's draw with Leeds
Michael Carrick praised his new-look £155million midfield after all three new signings started for the second game in a row in the draw at Leeds.
Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans kept their places from the team that produced a better performance in defeat in Madrid in midweek, with Baleba and Santos adding some bite into the centre of the pitch and Tielemans creating the goal for Bryan Mbeumo.
The presence of all three in the same side meant Bruno Fernandes played on the right against Atletico Madrid, while he was more central vs Leeds but in a 3-4-3 system, and it's been clear that Baleba, Santos and Tielemans have brought some more control to the side.
Although Dominic Calvert-Lewin lashed in a second-half equaliser for Leeds, Carrick felt the display gave his side something to build on and said the performance of 22-year-olds Baleba and Santos was a major positive.
"There was a freshness to the group," said Carrick. "We’ve got other options as well, and some are with us, some are not quite with us yet through injuries.
"But you look at the midfield with Manuel and Andey, that's a pretty fresh spine of the team through the middle of the pitch. And both young players are adapting to life at this football club, and I thought both of them were terrific today.

"I thought they both did really well in midweek, so that's a massive positive for us."
On Tielemans, Carrick added: "Really impressed with Youri. Exactly what we thought and hoped for bringing him into the group. I think his experience, his presence, his personality, Youri's definitely one of those who'll do anything you ask him for the benefit of the team.
"Got a huge amount of experience, and he was right there today again at the front of it, leading the team. We've got some really good experienced players, and he's definitely added to that."
Carrick played down concerns around Fernandes, who delivered another disappointing performance and was booked for a lunge on Tarik Muharemovic in the first half.
"He's all right, no, it's not a big deal," he said. "He was absolutely fine today, don't worry. Today, pretty much played where he has been playing for the most part, through the middle of the pitch, so there wasn't really too much change.
"He played a slightly different position in midweek, but apart from that, it's pretty much as usual, you know. And he's an important part of our team, Bruno, he has been for us for some time, and that's not changing."
