Allegri: Napoli know where we need to improve

Massimiliano Allegri insisted his Napoli side know where they have to improve ahead of their trip to Monza on Wednesday.

Napoli have struggled in Serie A as of late, winning just one of their last four games in the competition (D2 L1) following a 3-3 draw with Roma on the weekend.

The Partenopei twice led in that match (2-0 and 3-2) but could not hold onto either advantage, after more struggles at the back.

Napoli have faced an average of 16.6 shots per game in Serie A this season (3.9 on target); last season, they faced an average of 10.2 shots per match (3.0 on target).

They have also conceded six goals across their last two Champions League matches, but Allegri is confident his side have learned their lesson.

"We had a good game against Roma. We need to do better in terms of distribution," said Allegri.

"At times, we forced it against Roma when we could have managed possession better. At 2-0, we should have controlled it better.

"In the first halves, we have only conceded two goals this season. In the second halves, we've conceded eight, so there's data that shows us where to improve and that helps us understand that we need to be better in certain moments.

"I've seen some data. We're conceding an average of four shots on target per game, but that doesn't tell you how we concede them or where we're conceding them from.

"The data says we concede every four shots on target, so we have to work on ourselves when we are defending our own area, like for [Matias] Soule's first goal or the third goal against Roma.

"We have to work on that, there will be some mistakes, we will be better at other times."

After a 4-0 win over Cagliari, Ivan Juric's Monza side lost 3-2 against Torino last time out in Serie A.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Monza – Gustavo Varela

Varela (seven goals in seven games played) could become only the second player in the three-points-for-a-win era to score at least eight goals in his first eight Serie A appearances, after Krzysztof Piatek (nine goals in his first eight games in 2018-19).

The Portuguese could also be the second-youngest to achieve this (21 years and 271 days on the date of the match) in the competition's history, after Otello Torri (eight goals in eight matches for Novara between 1936 and 1937 at 19 years and 364 days).

Napoli – Scott McTominay

McTominay has scored consecutive braces in the Champions League and Serie A.

Since his debut for Napoli in September 2024, he is the midfielder from a Serie A team with the most goals in all competitions (31) and the most multiple-goal games (six), with Hakan Calhanoglu second in this ranking with three.

MATCH PREDICTION: NAPOLI WIN

Napoli have won four of their six Serie A matches against Monza (W4 D1 L1), including each of the last three by an aggregate score of 7-2.

And against no side have Napoli kept more clean sheets in Serie A than against Monza (four), level with Atalanta and AC Milan.

However, Napoli have lost two of their last three Serie A away games (D1), as many defeats as they registered in their previous 12 (W7 D3).

After their 1-0 loss against Venezia, Napoli could record two consecutive away defeats without scoring for the first time since December 2023 and January 2024 (three in a row under Walter Mazzarri).

Monza have won their last two Serie A home games (2-1 v Sassuolo and 4-0 v Cagliari) and have never recorded three consecutive home wins in the competition (also two between September and October 2022 and in November 2022).

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
