Bucs dominate, but their pass game still has questions

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers controlled their matchup against the Carolina Panthers from the opening drive, using a dominant rushing attack to build a comfortable lead in a 43-13 victory. Tampa Bay finished with 258 rushing yards on 45 carries, but despite the lopsided score, the passing game remained a concern. Bucky Irving established the tone immediately. He gained 47 yards and scored a touchdown on Tampa Bay’s opening drive, helping the Buccaneers take control before Carolina could settle into the game. Irving finished with 106 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, providing the consistency Tampa Bay needed to keep the offense moving. The commitment to the run was evident throughout the afternoon. Sean Tucker added a 46-yard touchdown, while Kenny Gainwell contributed 88 yards on 14 carries. With three running backs producing, Tampa Bay repeatedly found room against Carolina’s defense and kept the Panthers from dictating the pace. The Buccaneers didn't need explosive passing plays to move the ball; instead, they used their ground game to sustain drives and put points on the board.

That approach was especially useful as Baker Mayfield returned from a thumb injury. Mayfield completed 16 of 28 passes for 173 yards, throwing two touchdowns and one interception. The touchdown passes helped Tampa Bay capitalize on its opportunities, but the overall passing production showed that the offense still has room to improve. The Buccaneers have struggled to consistently generate yards through the air this season, and one strong team performance does not erase those concerns. The ground game gave Mayfield a manageable situation, but Tampa Bay will need more consistent passing against opponents capable of slowing Irving and the other running backs. The challenge is finding balance without abandoning what worked against Carolina. Tampa Bay should keep its running backs at the center of the offense, especially when Irving is producing at this level. At the same time, the passing game needs to become more reliable on early downs and third downs so the offense is not overly dependent on winning through the ground. The Buccaneers have a rushing attack they can trust. Improving the passing game will determine whether they can sustain that success against stronger defenses.
