Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has claimed that he would take Trent Alexander-Arnold back at Anfield, but he is not certain that it would be the right move for the overall group at this moment in time.
It follows rising speculation about the former Reds defender, as he continues to struggle in his time at Real Madrid, during his second season with the Spanish giants.
The 28-year-old was involved in the first campaign, though injuries and a lack of momentum meant he was unable to reach the heights of his time at Liverpool, while the current season has seen him drop down the pecking order as Jose Mourinho prefers other options.
Naturally that has led to some discussions about his future, with the potential for an exit to follow after a lack of minutes for Alexander-Arnold.
Teams have seemingly been circling the England international for a possible deal, if he becomes available in the near future, with Liverpool among those linked with a deal.
That has led to some debate about whether a return for the Merseyside outfit would make sense, considering the issues at right-back, but also the way that the star left last summer.
For Liverpool icon Gerrard, a move for Alexander-Arnold is one that he would take, but there are some reservations. He said on the Overlap Daily about a move: "That wasn’t on there [the running order]. Ability wise, talent wise, yes.
"The decision he made and all the stuff around it, do I think it would be the right thing for Liverpool’s group now and the supporters and things? I’m going to sit on the fence and say I’m unsure.
"Ability wise, talent wise, what he’d done for Liverpool in terms of the success, I would say yes but the ending and that still being a little bit raw. I would [take him back] yes. I would, yes, myself personally, so I won’t sit on the fence because that’s poor from me.
"I would yes. Do I think it’s the right thing for this group now and this manager now and where Liverpool are at right now? I’m unsure. I’m unsure. Does he make the Liverpool team and squad better? Ability wise and talent wise, he does 100 per cent.
"So, it’s tough, it’s tough. I would yes, and ability wise yes, I’m just not sure it’s right for the group right now. That’ll be my take on it."
It remains to be seen what will unfold between now and the following summer transfer window for Liverpool and Alexander-Arnold, with circumstances for both parties subject to change in the months ahead.
However, it seems clear that discussions around a move is ramping up, during a difficult period for the star, and a potentially challenging decision he could have to make.
