The Baltimore Ravens received several encouraging injury developments Thursday, with quarterback Lamar Jackson, safety Kyle Hamilton and linebacker Roquan Smith returning to practice ahead of Sunday's crucial Week 8 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
Jackson was on the field for the second straight day after participating fully Wednesday, another positive sign as the two-time NFL MVP works to return from a high ankle sprain that has sidelined him for three straight games.
According to The Baltimore Sun's Brian Wacker, Jackson returned to the field Thursday, while The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec reported that Hamilton also returned. The Ravens confirmed Smith's return with a social media post celebrating their defensive captain.
The developments matter because Hamilton and Smith were both listed as nonparticipants on Wednesday's injury report with knee injuries. Their return could boost defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, whose unit faces the NFL's highest-scoring offense Sunday.
Smith briefly exited Baltimore's 35-13 loss to Cincinnati with a knee injury before returning. Hamilton also appeared on Wednesday's injury report after the Ravens allowed the Bengals to score touchdowns on five consecutive second-half possessions.
The Ravens have been outscored 48-0 after halftime in consecutive losses to Cleveland and Cincinnati, making their defensive leaders' availability particularly important against Josh Allen and Buffalo's explosive offense.
Baltimore also got encouraging news along the offensive line: rookie right guard Vega Ioane returned to practice Thursday, just four days after suffering a reported MCL sprain against Cincinnati.
Ioane missed Wednesday's session, and initial reports suggested the first-round pick could miss time. His return gives Baltimore hope it can avoid another significant adjustment, though his availability remains uncertain.
Jackson's continued participation is arguably the most important development. The Ravens are 1-2 without him, struggling to sustain offensive production with Tyler Huntley under center. Baltimore scored just 10 points against Cleveland and 13 against Cincinnati and failed to score after halftime in either game. Jackson's potential return would significantly boost an offense featuring Derrick Henry, Zay Flowers, and Mark Andrews, particularly against a Buffalo team entering Sunday's matchup at 5-1.
Still, Thursday's practice appearances don't guarantee any of the returning players will be available against the Bills. Their official participation levels and Friday's final injury designations will provide additional clarity.
For a Ravens team trying to avoid a third straight loss, having Jackson, Hamilton, Smith, and Ioane back on the practice field is an encouraging development at a critical point in the season.
