Manchester United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at Old Trafford in their latest Premier League fixture, meaning they have still only registered one win in the division from their opening eight games.
Michael Carrick took the decision to start club captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench after his comments midweek in Como, but it did not pay off for the manager.
As Carrick and his squad disappeared down the tunnel, the Old Trafford faithful let their feelings known towards Fernandes as the Portuguese midfielder made his way towards the dressing room.
The Red Devils’ 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth was humbling for Carrick, the club and the fans as a piece of history was made by the Cherries.
Bournemouth became the first ever club to score three or more goals in a league fixture on four consecutive occasions at Old Trafford.
Yet, despite this unwanted piece of history for Man United and their fans, they sang Carrick’s name for the final 10 minutes of the match as they accepted the defeat.
Carrick was serenaded right until he disappeared down the tunnel, as he looked as if he knew that his time as Man United manager was over.
However, upon his disappearance from Old Trafford, it immediately changed to boos towards the players, with most of the anger being directed towards Fernandes.
Fans made it clear what their feelings are towards Fernandes after his recent comments at Como and his performances this season.
The Portuguese midfielder is in his final year of his contract and it appears the fans may be happy to see the back of him.
The Sky Sports pundit was quick to offer a theory on why Carrick did not turn to his captain in their defeat to Bournemouth.
Carrick is a popular figure with the United fans due to the success that he had as a player and his achievement with the club last season as interim manager.
Fernandes has not been anywhere near as successful as Carrick during his time at the club, delivering only an FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Jamie Carragher believes that it was a purposeful decision by Carrick to leave Fernandes on the bench to embarrass the 32-year-old.
He said: “I think it was a deliberate decision to leave him on the bench and almost try and embarrass him.”
The Liverpool legend also believes that Carrick does not want to be at the club no longer, believing he would be better off resigning as the manager.
He said: “When you're talking about whether Michael Carrick is going to be changed, he is going to be changed. He wants to be changed. He does. He doesn't want to be sitting in the dugout again for Manchester United with those players. He doesn't.
"What we're watching now is a situation where it becomes untenable for everybody. Nobody is actually enjoying watching Michael Carrick at the moment. Can you imagine going into the training ground tomorrow and facing Bruno Fernandes after not bringing him on in that situation?
"He doesn't want to be involved in that. He wants to be put out of his misery tonight."
