The elephant in the room at Newcastle United

Newcastle United Sporting Director Ross Wilson, is he the elephant in the room at St James’ Park?

We saw a huge change at Newcastle United ahead of summer 2026, the club moving to a new model when it came to player recruitment and transfers in and out generally.

Rather than the Manager/Head Coach being the main man when it came to transfers, it was now Newcastle United Sporting Director Ross Wilson.

This isn’t some brand new concept, many other clubs in the modern game do the same, especially on the continent.

David Hopkinson remaining in charge of the business side of the football club.

Ross Wilson becoming undoubtedly the main man in charge of the football side, this no longer whoever picks the team.

This model has inherent dangers.

At Everton last night, the Newcastle United starting eleven had more outfield players who were bought in when Mike Ashley was in control than during the time Ross Wilson has been in control of transfers.

Fabian Schar, Joe Willock and Jacob Murphy were in the team last night, as were Amar Dedic and Nico Gonzalez. Goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek evened things up when it came to overall starters from the Mike Ashley era vs Ross Wilson in control of transfers.

Around £291m was spent on eight incoming deals this season chosen by Ross Wilson.

Newcastle United signings in the summer 2026 transfer window (amounts include potential add-ons)

£24.6m Ewen Jaouen
£43m Bazoumana Toure
£23m Sean Steur
£35.5m Aladji Bamba
£25.7m Lukas Hornicek
£29.5m Amar Dedic
£52m Nico Gonzalez
£55m Matias Fernandez-Pardo
£3m Ousmane Diabaté

I am not saying that the signings amongst the above that have arrived since Matthias Jaissle was appointed, were imposed against his will. However, that is very different to when a Manager/Head Coach is the one dictating who the key targets are that the club should go for. The club even made clear that Amar Dedic was already on their radar even before Matthias Jaissle arrived, though of course I’m sure he would have been asked for his thoughts on a player he’d previously managed.

I think it is fair to say that if Matthias Jaissle had been able to have control over what the £290m+ had been spent on this summer, then he would have picked very different players in almost all cases.

Whether Jaissle’s choices would have proved great choices, or not, is something that we will never know.

What we do know is who Ross Wilson brought in this past summer and how few of them are getting into the first team under Matthias Jaissle. I am not talking about just that defeat at Everton, this is across the eleven matches.

Put it this way. If all of the Newcastle United squad were fit and there was an important match to play, I think only Nico Gonzalez of the summer outfield signings would be starting, plus Lukas Hornicek.

Having somebody picking the signings, who isn’t the one who picks the team, is an extra layer of potential trouble.

This is before you even get to how good, or not, the new signings are?

So is it a case that Matthias Jaissle hasn’t this season had the right level of summer 2026 signings at the club, or is it that he isn’t using them in the best way possible, whether that is on the training pitch, his team selection, his tactics and formation?

I know it was made clear that the transfer activity across summer 2026 was also with an eye to the future BUT if you don’t get things correct for the present, then those future plans and hopes can end up potentially irrelevant.

The other huge factor of course came with the decision making this summer on which players left.

Around £249m worth of transfer fees from the following PLUS so many of the highest earning players leaving, ten outgoing deals this season under the direction of Ross Wilson.

Newcastle United departures in the summer 2026 transfer window (amounts include potential add-ons)

£70m Anthony Gordon
£0 Aaron Ramsdale end of loan spell
£0 Emil Krafth end of contract
£0 Matt Targett end of contract
£0 John Ruddy end of contract
£0 Kieran Trippier end of contract
£100m Sandro Tonali
£75m Bruno Guimaraes
£4m Nick Woltemade loan fee
£0 Ousmane Diabaté loan

Ross Wilson had a very difficult situation to confront with UEFA SCR issues, needing to cut the wage bill and make it a significant SCR positive overall in terms of transfer trading.

As well as a number of experienced players not given new contracts, the decision was taken to sell one or more key players, with then most of the squad investment to go on young inexperienced overseas players from weaker leagues.

Ross Wilson made clear that he and the club hadn’t wanted Bruno Guimaraes to leave but it would have been naive in the extreme to think that after making decisions to move out the likes of Gordon, Tonali and Trippier, that Bruno G would have chosen to stay at this stage of his career when offered the chance to join the Premier League champions AND Newcastle United going into a new ‘2.0’ era of rebuilding for the future, not so much the here and now.

This elephant in the room scenario at Newcastle United then has yet another level when it comes to Ross Wilson, as he was in charge if choosing the successor to Eddie Howe, one….Matthias Jaissle.

So the Newcastle United Sporting Director choosing which players were signed, which players sold, AND choosing who was the new Head Coach.

I am in no way already writing off Ross Wilson or Newcastle United 2.0, nor any of the summer 2026 signings.

At the same time though, a huge question mark does hang over the Newcastle United Sporting Director and where NUFC are heading under his control and leadership…
