Two of Bedford’s young boxing talents are looking ahead to a bright future in the ring after picking up gold medals at the WBC Counties Box Cup at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury last weekend (23-25 October).

12-year-old Musa Khan, and Jeremiah ‘Mushy’ Fletcher, 14, both of Real Bedford Boxing Club, struck gold at the prestigious boxing event which hosted bouts in four rings at once across three days of competition.

With more than 500 competitors and international entries, the WBC Counties Box Cup provides a challenging initial stage for competitive boxing, which Bedford’s youngsters came through in flying colours.

14-year old Fletcher won three bouts to claim a gold medal in the Under-38kg 2012 Open Elite category, one of which was against the nationally ranked number one, adding to an already impressive record of 28 fights for the youngster.

His first fight came in the competition’s first stage on Friday afternoon, claiming victory over Frank Varey of Jennings Boxing Club, before going on to beat Ritchie Corcoran of Yeading Boxing Club the following day.

Fletcher would have to wait until Sunday (25 October) for his gold medal match up against Frank Eastwood of Sporting Ring Amigos, completing the perfect weekend.

Mushy’s achievement is even more impressive given that he had already won gold at the Barum Box Cup in Devon in September.

12-year old Musa Khan was also a gold medal winner, beating Jack Cotton of Unit 7 also on Sunday’s final day, to cap a perfect weekend for Real Bedford Boxing Club.

“Behind these achievements lies a great deal of hard work, commitment and guidance”, said a spokesperson for Real Bedford Boxing Club.

“A huge thank you goes to trainers Avi and Amun Kalyan for their dedication, coaching and continued support in helping the young boxers develop their skills and confidence.

“Their work in the gym plays a vital role in preparing the boxers for the demands of competition, and these results are a proud reflection of the effort invested by both the athletes and their coaching team.

“For Real Bedford Boxing Club, two gold medals at a competition of this size represents a fantastic achievement and an outstanding way to launch the new amateur boxing season.

“The club is immensely proud of Musa and Mushy, their achievements, and the dedication of Avi and Amun Kalyan.

“Their performances are a testament to the talent and hard work developing at Real Bedford Boxing Club and provide plenty of excitement for the season ahead.”
