Being an NBA referee comes with its fair share of pressure, heated exchanges, and confrontations with players. However, for former NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who was later at the centre of one of the biggest cheating scandals in sporting history, one incident went well beyond the usual arguments on the basketball court.
Donaghy, who officiated in the NBA for 13 seasons, recalled a frightening encounter with a player who was so furious after a game that he decided to confront him in the parking lot.
What should have been a routine post-game departure quickly turned into a situation that could have ended in a physical altercation.
According to Donaghy, the player had waited for him outside the arena, near the area where the players entered and exited. Rather than allowing the disagreement to remain on the court, he appeared determined to settle things face-to-face.
“After the game was over, he waited out in the parking lot for me. We parked our car right in the back, where the players went in and out, and he waited for me. When I came out, he wanted to fight me,” Donaghy recalled.
The former official admitted that he did not exactly help calm the situation down. Instead of walking away, he responded with a remark that only made the player even angrier.
“I said something back to him along the lines, ‘You f****** deserved it.’ Which was a big mistake because that kinda set him off, and he just came at me, wanted to fight me.”
So, who was the player involved in the confrontation? It was none other than Rasheed Wallace, one of the NBA's most fiery and outspoken personalities during his playing career.
Wallace was no stranger to disagreements with officials. His intensity and willingness to challenge referees became a familiar part of his reputation, with his emotional reactions often making headlines and placing him among the NBA players with the most ejections in league history. However, this particular incident allegedly took things beyond the usual on-court back-and-forth.
Donaghy's response proved to be a costly mistake, as the confrontation quickly escalated. Wallace attempted to get physical with the referee, leaving Donaghy in a potentially dangerous position.
Fortunately, he was not alone. Three security guards stepped in to prevent the situation from getting out of control, while former NBA guard Brevin Knight also helped pull Wallace away.
“If it wasn’t for 3 security guards and Brevin Knight pulling him back, he probably would’ve got to me,” Donaghy concluded.
The incident highlights how tensions between NBA players and officials can sometimes extend far beyond the final buzzer. Referees are regularly required to make split-second decisions that can frustrate players, coaches, and fans, but confrontations of this nature are certainly outside the normal boundaries of the game.
For Donaghy, the experience was a reminder that being an NBA official could involve more than simply enforcing the rules for 48 minutes. And while Wallace's reputation for intensity was well established, this alleged parking-lot confrontation offered a particularly striking example of just how heated things could become between players and referees.
