Lucas Bergvall has fallen down the midfield pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Big-money summer signings Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have increased competition for midfield places. As a result, Lucas Bergvall has faced an uphill task in getting into Roberto De Zerbi’s first XI. Currently injured, though, the 20-year-old has made only four Premier League appearances, clocking less than 150 minutes of action.

Despite only penning a new deal in September, speculation over the Swedish international’s future at Spurs has persisted. Barcelona have reportedly renewed their interest in the central midfielder after missing out on his services to Tottenham in February 2024. The Spanish champions are now considering another attempt to secure Bergvall’s services, impressed by his technical ability, reading of the game, energy, athleticism and versatility.

However, Barcelona are not the only club monitoring his situation. Napoli have also reportedly expressed an interest in the Tottenham starlet. Max Allegri could oversee a big midfield revamp next summer, and the Napoli boss has identified Bergvall as one of the options to freshen up the particular position.

Tottenham make decision on Lucas Bergvall’s future amid Barcelona and Napoli interest

According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Tottenham are relaxed about the situation of Bergvall. They remain aware that the youngster will attract further interest as he develops, but the Lilywhites are not concerned about losing him next year.

Bergvall was keen to move on from Spurs for pastures new in the summer, but Roberto De Zerbi managed to convince him to stay. Not only that, but the Italian tactician also played a key role in the 20-year-old signing a new deal in September. The Swede is understood to be far ‘happier’ with his current situation in N17 than he was in the summer.

The report adds that Tottenham have no plans to sanction the midfielder’s sale anytime soon. The Hotspur Way chiefs have “big aspirations” for Bergvall long-term, and believe that he can become a “mainstay” in their starting XI for several years.

Bergvall is the future of Spurs

Tottenham remain in a strong negotiating position after persuading Bergvall to pen fresh terms until 2031. They are reluctant to let him leave, particularly given their belief in the ex-Djurgarden prodigy’s long-term potential.

De Zerbi, his coaching staff and the key decision-makers have a lot of hope in the Stockholm native, who is only 20 and has a long way to go in his career. Nonetheless, the versatile midfielder’s lack of regular opportunities could become a concern if the situation continues over the coming months.

Barcelona and Napoli may, therefore, look to exploit any uncertainty around the player’s role at White Hart Lane, although convincing Tottenham to negotiate a deal in January will be extremely tough.
