Manchester United’s midfield underwent a significant change during the summer transfer window as the club looked to reshape an area that had come under scrutiny.
The arrival of new players gave the squad additional options, while also signalling a shift in the type of midfield profile United wanted to build around.
However, strengthening that department is rarely a one-window project, particularly at a club competing across several competitions.
Bruno Fernandes remains an important figure in the centre of the pitch, but questions over his commitment has shaped discussions about his United future even though reports came out stating he is committed to the cause.
The club must also consider how its midfielders fit together, rather than simply adding more names to an already competitive position.
Manchester United have now reportedly turned their attention towards two young Spanish midfielders, with Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez and Atletico Madrid’s Pablo Barrios emerging as players of interest.
Journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking to MARCA, claims United have made enquiries about Fermin Lopez and also explored the possibility of bringing Barrios to Old Trafford.
Neither situation has reached the stage of formal negotiations as of yet.
Fermin has become an increasingly influential member of Hansi Flick’s Barcelona squad.
The 23-year-old has recorded four goals and three assists in nine La Liga appearances this season, while adding another goal and an assist in three Champions League outings.
Those numbers underline his ability to arrive in dangerous areas and contribute directly to Barcelona’s attack.
A move would be difficult to negotiate, however.
Fermin is under contract with Barcelona until 2031 and remains an important part of their plans.
Barrios represents a different midfield profile.
The 23-year-old has featured regularly for Atletico this season, making seven La Liga appearances and registering one assist.
He has also scored once in two Champions League matches, giving him eight appearances and two goal contributions across the competitions.
Despite spending heavily to reshape the department in the summer, United’s reported interest suggests the club are still considering how to improve their options.
Their recruitment followed Casemiro’s departure and came amid Manuel Ugarte’s serious knee injury.
