Mizzou’s Mark Mitchell receives temporary injunction; eligible to play

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mizzou's leading scorer from last season, Mark Mitchell, is eligible to play after receiving a temporary injunction from Kentucky judge Brian Edwards.

Mitchell, along with more than 30 other athletes, were granted a fifth year of eligibility in the state of Kentucky.

The 23-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, native originally committed to Kentucky before decommitting from the school back in August and rejoining Mizzou due to uncertainty regarding Mitchell’s eligibility at Kentucky because of SEC’s intraconference transfer rules.

Mitchell was granted a temporary restraining order from Edwards in September, making him eligible to play, but the Kentucky Court of Appeals dissolved the temporary injunction on Oct. 2, making Mitchell ineligible.

An evidentiary hearing was held on Wednesday, where head coach Dennis Gates testified. The result of the hearing was Edwards sticking with the initial ruling of granting the athletes a temporary injunction.

It is unclear if Mitchell can play the full season, with this ruling being temporary and the NCAA likely to appeal the decision.

Mizzou has exhibition games on the horizon against K-State on Oct. 23, and UNLV on Oct. 29. They open the regular season on Nov. 3 against Cleveland State.
