Kyren Wilson did not hide his annoyance when a member of the Northern Ireland Open crowd sarcastically applauded his mistakes. The 2024 World Snooker Champion was up against it in the semi-final against Sam Craigie. The former World No. 1 had to come back from 5-3 down to overcome his fellow Englishman in a dramatic final frame. Wilson looked set for a comfortable stroll into the final when he moved into a 3-1 lead, but Craigie hit back by winning the next four frames in a row.
Frustration began to seep into Wilson, who was not helped by an obnoxious member of the crowd, who clapped every miss he made. Eventually, the 34-year-old let his anger with the spectator be known after the unwanted applause followed a mistake in the eighth frame.
While losing 4-3, Wilson misread the angle of a red and sent the ball ricocheting of the corners of both pockets and back out into the middle of the table. His mistake was greeted with the all too familiar clap from the fan.
He had evidently had enough, as he responded by pointing at him with his cue in a bid to alert the referee and other officials of the individual's whereabouts. This was also noticed by TNT Sports co-commentator David Hendon, who realised Wilson was becoming even angrier.
The broadcaster said: "I think what it is, every time he misses, there is a particular person who seems to clap, which is not nice to hear. He seems a bit annoyed by it."
Despite the spectator, Wilson squeezed past Craigie to reach the final and book a meeting with Jak Jones in the final. After his semi-final triumph, he did reference the crowd, but did not focus on the disrupter.
He said: "[The crowd here] cheer on both players, especially when they’re seeing good snooker, and you get that sense as soon as you walk out.
"I can’t wait for tomorrow, maybe I put too much pressure on myself to make that final but I can’t wait. I’m definitely going to have a few Guinness after that, I need it!"
In the final, Wilson has put himself in an excellent position by ending the first session with a commanding 6-2 lead over the World No. 24.
