Last night's thrilling fightback against Manchester United was a much-needed boost for manager Michael Carrick. Will it actually 'save his job' or just earn him a stay of execution though?

Looking back at some of his predecessors suggests it will be the latter. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho both saw their side fight back from 2-0 down to ease the pressure with 3-2 victories, only to be sacked a few weeks later.

Current Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini was in charge of Atalanta when they visited Old Trafford for a Champions League game in October 2021.

The Italians gained a 2-0 lead by half-time but United hit back with second-half goals from Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Red Devils were thumped 5-0 at home by Liverpool the following weekend, though, and a 4-1 defeat at Watford saw Solskjaer get sacked in November 2021, with Carrick then having three games as interim boss.

Solskjaer's predecessor Mourinho suffered a similar fate as United hosted Newcastle on the back of a four-game winless run in October 2018.

United went 2-0 down inside 10 minutes and were still 2-0 down with 20 minutes left, but Juan Mata and Anthony Martial then drew them level before Alexis Sanchez scored a last-minute winner.

Yet two months later Mourinho was sacked after a 3-1 loss at Liverpool.

Bayern Munich continued their unbeaten start to the Champions League season with an assured victory at Atletico Madrid.

Teenage star Lennart Karl had a first half to forget, but he redeemed himself by breaking the deadlock with a sneaky finish nine minutes after the restart.

The 18-year-old nipped in behind Robin le Normand, snatched the ball from the Atletico defender and chipped it effortlessly over Jan Oblak.

Konrad Laimer doubled the visitors' lead, blasting a ferocious strike over Oblak and into the roof of the net after he was picked out in space by Harry Kane.

Kane, playing in his first European match since winning the Ballon d'Or, had less luck in front of goal and missed the chance to make more history by equalling Cristiano Ronaldo's record for the longest Champions League scoring streak.

The England captain had scored in his previous 10 appearances, but he failed to trouble the Atletico goalkeeper - shanking an acrobatic attempt wide before drilling a low strike off target.

Oblak made a fine save to tip a deflected strike from Dayot Upamecano on to the crossbar, while Manuel Neuer had a quiet evening at the other end - facing just one shot on target from the hosts.

Despite Manchester United's terrible start, Michael Carrick still believed they could get something from the game.

The head coach insists he is blocking out the external noise and remains fully committed to turning the club's fortunes around.

"At half-time, I was wanting them to be more positive, if anything, and not get too disappointed and frustrated," said Carrick.

"When you keep trying to do something, the easiest thing is feeling sorry for yourself. If something goes wrong, you get disappointed. That's not going to help anybody. We might as well all go home if that's the case. We've got to keep looking for the next moment, the next solution.

"I don't like to keep talking to the lads about what this place can do and the history and what's gone before too much, but it's there.

"This place does magical things, it's done it before and it'll do it over and over again at some point in the future. There's just something in this place that when we do have these types of nights, we do it the hard way.

"But one moment can flip the whole place in a different direction. I spoke about that with the boys. Let's have one moment that can trigger it. And we had that."
