Mason McCormack chewed out Germie Bernard over fourth-down error

When a rookie wide receiver makes a mistake on fourth down, the response on the sideline often dictates how quickly they adapt to the speed and stakes of the NFL. For Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver Germie Bernard, a critical mistake during a key fourth-down sequence against Tampa Bay became an immediate lesson in accountability and situational awareness.

Catching an under route short of the line to gain, Bernard spotted a defender closing in on his upfield shoulder. Attempting to create space, he retreated to make the tackler miss, a habit that worked in college but proved costly in the pros. The defender brought Bernard down short of the line, turning the ball over on downs.

On a recent episode of his teammate Cameron Heyward’s podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward," Bernard detailed what happened. He said as he got up, guard Mason McCormick immediately let him hear it.

"McCormick, he’s like, 'Sir, what the… are you doing? Get down. Go forward,'" Bernard recalled. "He’s cussing me out and I’m like, 'Yeah, yeah. I need that. I need that.'"

Rather than wilting under the heated confrontation, Bernard embraced the tough love from his offensive lineman. The rookie recognized that high-stakes moments require brutal honesty, especially when individual instincts conflict with team goals.

Shortly after, head coach Mike McCarthy sat down with Bernard on the bench to reinforce the operational lesson behind McCormick's frustration.

"Coach came and sat down next to me. He was like, 'You just got to understand situational awareness,'" Bernard shared. "'First, second down, okay you can do that, but third, fourth down, you just got to catch it and fall forward. Don’t try to do too much. Let the big plays come to you.'"

The sequence highlighted a crucial rite of passage for Pittsburgh's young core. Armed with direct accountability from McCormick and clear situational coaching from McCarthy and he bounced back later in the contest to score his first career NFL touchdown, proving that embracing sideline criticism is often the fastest path to rookie growth.
