While there have been growing rumblings that Bo Nix’s days as the Denver Broncos‘ starting quarterback are numbered, a prominent NFL insider shut down the speculation in a new report.
It’s safe to say that year three for the Broncos QB has been very disappointing so far. After six weeks, he hasn’t thrown for 300 or more yards in a game, has only topped 200 twice, and hit a new low point in their win on Thursday night with just 107 yards through the air.
Although Denver owns a 4-2 record, there are major concerns about the young QB regressing and holding their offense back. It even led to a scathing opinion about Nix from former NFL QB Ryan Fitzpatrick on Thursday night.
“There are a lot of guys who have played this game that watch that and think, ‘That right there is garbage. That effort is garbage. That is not a quarterback in the NFL. We deserve better,’” Fitzpatrick said.
His comments, and head coach Sean Payton taking over play calling recently, have only intensified the talk that Nix could be benched. However, according to Tom Pelissero, he is hearing nothing from the Broncos that makes him believe a QB change is being considered.
The NFL insider claims, “Nobody in the Broncos’ building is more competitive than Bo Nix,” and he is one of the team’s hardest workers. Furthermore, “his teammates love him” because he has an 18-3 record in his last 21 starts, including having a great game in a win over the Buffalo Bills in last year’s playoffs. Plus, he helped rally them from 10 down to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2 and scored the game-winning TD a week later against the Los Angeles Rams.
Pelissero added that the Broncos have gone up against some of the best defenses in the NFL in their first six games, “including Seattle, who played a ton of shell coverage to limit Nix’s downfield opportunities on Thursday night.”
Suffice it to say, based on what the NFL insider is hearing, Denver is not at all seriously thinking about benching their QB1.
