Key matchups for Panthers vs. Packers in Week 8

The Carolina Panthers are under the lights again this week, as they visit the Green Bay Packers for some Thursday night football. Their last prime-time matchup went pretty well, as they defeated Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions in a thrilling Sunday nighter in Week 4.

If the Panthers are going to pull off another victory under the bright lights, they'll have to win a few key individual matchups against the Packers.

Here are four to keep an eye on . . .

Panthers QB Bryce Young vs. Packers DC Jonathan Gannon

Young had his first stinker of 2026 last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, taking five sacks and coughing up three turnovers. You can bet the Packers will try to copy some of what Tampa did well against him.

Gannon may try to emulate Todd Bowles' blitz-heavy style, or find other ways to get to Young—who's faced more quick pressures than any other quarterback in the NFL this season. For his part, Young has to deal with the pressure and not get thrown off his game, as he was against the Bucs.

Panthers WR Jalen Coker vs. Packers CB Javon Bullard

One way the Panthers can help Young is getting a big outing from Coker, who reeled in just one of his four targets for nine yards in Week 7. Coker was also a non-factor in last year's meeting with the Packers, also posting just one catch for nine yards.

Carolina's offense has improved, but it's not deep enough to handle too many poor games from their second-best pass catcher. They need Coker to go off on Bullard—who has seven pass breakups, but has also allowed two touchdowns and an 88.0 passer rating in coverage.

Panthers DT Lee Hunter vs. Packers C Jager Burton

It looks like the Packers will have to go without starting center Sean Rhyan, who suffered a high-ankle sprain against Detroit on Sunday. That sets up a meeting of the rookies in the middle of the line of scrimmage.

Hunter has shown flashes—but has just one quarterback hit, no sacks and zero tackles for a loss. He should have a chance to break through against Burton, a fifth-round draft pick. A breakout game from Hunter would be a great help to a struggling defensive line.

Panthers CB Will Lee III vs. Packers WR Christian Watson

Carolina's defense will be most vulnerable outside, where they're still missing Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson. Lee may have the toughest matchup of the evening when he lines up across from the Packers' top wide receiver in Watson.

The 2026 fourth-rounder has done well so far, allowing a 50-percent completion rate and a 75.4 passer rating. However, Watson has a significant size advantage and has posted 34 catches, 595 yards and six touchdowns.
