Andy Burnham Reveals Family Plot to Change Celtic Allegiance

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has revealed that Celtic are his preferred Scottish football club, although a family connection to Hibernian is beginning to influence his allegiance.

Burnham explained that his son is preparing to marry into a Hibs-supporting family, bringing the Edinburgh club into his family’s football conversations.

There is plenty more in our latest Celtic news and transfers coverage.

His son has also been attending matches at Easter Road, including Celtic’s recent visit to Hibernian.

“My son is marrying into a Hibs family,” Burnham said: (The Scotsman).

“He was up for Hibs Celtic last week, was it last week? Yeah.

“He was at Easter Road last week, so he’s up and down a lot now, isn’t he?”

Burnham was then asked about his own preference when it comes to Scottish football.

Despite his son’s connection to Hibernian, the Prime Minister indicated that Celtic remain the side he favours.

“He’s trying to get me on this. I’m more Celtic. He’s got me leaning Hibs a bit.”

The comments offer an insight into Burnham’s football interests away from his responsibilities at Downing Street.

Although he expressed a preference for Celtic, he did not describe himself as a lifelong supporter or explain how his interest in the Glasgow club developed.

His comments also suggest that Hibernian are becoming a more familiar presence in his family through his son’s forthcoming marriage.

Burnham previously served as Mayor of Greater Manchester before returning to Westminster earlier this year and subsequently becoming Labour leader and Prime Minister.

His comments on Friday were focused on football rather than politics, with the Celtic-Hibs connection providing a talking point following the clubs’ recent Premiership meeting.

The Prime Minister has indicated that Celtic remain his Scottish preference, even as his son develops closer ties with the Easter Road club.
