Jose Mourinho’s ‘outrageous’ comment during his post-match interview following Real Madrid’s dramatic 2-1 win over Barcelona on Sunday evening has gone viral.

Los Blancos initially took the lead through Kylian Mbappe in the 41st minute, but with their Catalan rivals enjoying the lion’s share of possession and Raphinha finding an equaliser just beyond the hour mark, it looked as though the La Liga leaders would find a way to maintain their perfect start to the season.

In typical Mourinho style, though, Real Madrid found a way to turn the tide, with Mbappe striking again against the run of play to put them back in front and snatch victory at Camp Nou in the 87th minute - their first win there since 2021.

For many, the result was proof that the ‘Special One’ still has what it takes to deliver on the biggest stage. And if there was any lingering doubt, his comments in the post-match fallout only served to win even more people over.

Mourinho is never afraid to whip up a storm in press conferences. The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss is known just as much for his mind games and barbed remarks as he is for his shrewd, dark-arts approach to football.

Following victory this weekend, he couldn't resist taking a dig at Barcelona fans, who had gathered outside Real Madrid's team hotel the night before in an attempt to disrupt their preparations. Mourinho said:

"I dedicate this win to the Barca fans that did not let me take my nap in the hotel today. They came to the hotel, and they kept singing all day, so I couldn't take my nap. Well, I didn't nap, but I did beat their team. A big hug to them."

Reacting to his nonchalant comments, one X user replied: "The nap line after beating them is outrageous," as a second continued: "The special one cooking on and off the pitch."

A third remarked: "He’s the funniest person in the world," a fourth asked: "He really said that?" as a fifth concluded: "This guy is the best thing that ever happened in modern football."

On a night when many media outlets are pushing the narrative that Real Madrid had ‘stolen’ a win in Barcelona, not enough is being said about the way Los Blancos actually scored their winning goal.

Certainly, Mourinho’s usual tactics - coupled with his cutting remarks after the final whistle - would suggest it was a vintage smash-and-grab victory from the Special One. The statistics would also seem to back that up.

But everything from Jude Bellingham’s nutmeg and pirouette to wriggle out of a congested midfield to Mbappe’s quick reactions to beat his man and prod home the winner was anything but the ugly brand of football many might have expected. Far from simply parking the bus and waiting for their chance to pounce, Los Blancos showed flashes of real quality. Watch the winning goal below:

Los Blancos have now won eight of their last nine matches in all competitions, and Mourinho appears to have found a way to keep a lid on a dressing room that many of his predecessors have suggested has too many cooks in the kitchen, with an abundance of big egos to manage.

They still trail their El Clasico rivals by three points in the league table, but Mourinho has seemingly struck the right chord with his side. After two trophyless seasons, Real Madrid appear to be back on an upward trajectory, and the Special One may yet have the last laugh.
