F1 reassures teams Middle East races will go ahead as planned

Formula 1 has assured its 11 teams its business as usual for the two Middle East races set to finish the season. The message came after Yamaha withdrew its entry from this weekend's MotoGP race in Qatar at the Losail circuit also hosting F1 on Nov. 29.

In a statement, Yamaha's MotoGP team said it found "no sufficient grounds" to alter its travel policy which currently restricts travel to the Middle East due to the war in Iran earlier this year.

After the Qatar Grand Prix, F1 is due to travel to Abu Dhabi for the season-ender on Dec. 6.

Formula 1's message, seen by ESPN, was an update on the Yamaha and Moto GP situation -- the championships are both run by Liberty Media -- and reiterated that the end of the Formula 1 season will go ahead as planned. It also cautioned the teams about speaking out publicly or being dragged into speculation by the media.

The message appeared to confirm drivers and teams are being directed not to be critical of the situation publicly, which has been clear for a while.

Williams driver and Grand Prix Drivers' Association director Carlos Sainz said ahead of last month's United States Grand Prix that it was "very difficult to be convinced right now" that F1 should be racing in the Middle East, only to row back his comments completely with a statement less than two hours later.

F1's messaging on the final races has not changed all year. The sport is in constant communication with the relevant authorities in both countries and that they have assurances both are safe as things stand. F1 will also point to unchanged guidance from various governments around the world.

It is also monitoring and mindful of developments that might arise from the conclusion of the U.S. midterm elections on Nov. 3.

The sport has a contingency plan to race in Imola on Dec. 6 if it has to cancel those races.

The circuit, in northern Italy, works for Formula 1 as a contingency plan as it is in Europe, where all 11 of the teams are based.

Formula 1 teams always have freight in circulation worldwide given the complexities of the calendar.

One team source told ESPN that their logistics have bene continuing as normal, with freight used for Baku's Azerbaijan Grand Prix heading to Qatar and freight used for the rescheduled Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia due to be used in Abu Dhabi.

Different sources have given ESPN different cutoff dates about how late a cutoff date they would need to know about switching to Imola on late notice, but Formula 1 appears confident a late switchover could be made.

On the hypothetical situation of escalations occurring during either Middle East race weekend, Formula 1 has also stressed to ESPN it has comprehensive evacuation plans in place at every grand prix event anyway and that it has walked through scenarios with the 11 teams in the event teams would need to suddenly leave Qatar or Abu Dhabi's races.

Formula 1 has insisted that the decision to cancel the final races has nothing to do with sporting ramifications, but any decision to do so now will not affect the outcome of the drivers' championship, with Kimi Antonelli crowned at Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix.

Given Antonelli's huge lead, cancelling a race before he had sealed it risked the Italian drivers' championship being confirmed by press release.
