Manchester United have enjoyed some memorable European nights at Old Trafford, but their latest Champions League fixture delivered more drama than most.

Michael Carrick’s side needed a response after a difficult spell of results had put pressure on their season.

United were also looking to make their home advantage count against a Roma team capable of causing problems in transition.

United’s attacking options provided plenty of excitement before the season began especially seeing how they finished last season, with Matheus Cunha among the players capable of changing a game in an instant.

The Brazilian has brought intensity, confidence and a willingness to take responsibility in the final third since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Matheus Cunha was at the centre of United’s dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma, scoring twice to complete a comeback from two goals down.

However, the forward’s celebrations and subsequent dismissal threatened to create another problem for Carrick, particularly after he returned to the pitch following his red card.

UEFA have now confirmed that Cunha will not face an extended suspension for coming back onto the field to celebrate with his teammates.

The Brazilian will serve the automatic one-match ban for receiving two yellow cards, ruling him out of United’s upcoming trip to Sporting CP on 25 November.

A UEFA spokesperson, as relayed by the Manchester Evening News, said, “The UEFA official reports did not mention anything about this incident. Therefore the automatic one-match ban following two yellow cards should not be extended for this reason.

“We are not investigating further this matter.”

Cunha had initially been booked for his celebrations after scoring the winning goal, before receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time for a foul on Leonardo Balerdi.

He watched the closing moments from an advertising board before returning to join the celebrations at full-time.

Carrick was visibly keen to get the forward off the pitch when he spotted him celebrating, eventually directing him towards the tunnel.

The United boss admitted he was disappointed with how the incident unfolded, but made it clear that he valued the emotion and commitment Cunha brings to the team.

“Matheus can do them things, he’s got them moments,” the United head coach said.

“We put him inside, we swapped him with Bran at half-time to try and get him in the middle of the pitch, try and give us a little bit of different shape, and put him in the centre of the pitch, and he found himself in good positions.

“Disappointed with how it finished, but again just shows how much he cares and willing to do, and when he’s in that frame of mind, he’s in that mood and he plays like that, that’s what we want from him.”

United will now be able to move on from the disciplinary issue without fearing an additional UEFA ban.

Cunha will miss the Sporting fixture, but remains available for the club’s subsequent European matches, with Carrick likely to welcome his attacking energy back into the side.
