Emi Martinez is believed to have undergone jaw surgery after being stretchered off during Chelsea’s win over Everton, and an injury timeline has been revealed. But how many games will he miss?
Pedro Neto scored a brace as Chelsea secured back-to-back wins in the Premier League, keeping their first clean sheet in the Premier League since Liam Rosenior’s first league game, a 2-0 win over Brentford.
It has been nine months and 23 Premier League games without one, before Martinez and Mike Penders combined to keep Everton at bay. But Martinez was stretchered off towards the end of the game.
With the scoreline reading 1-0, Everton had a free-kick. Martinez and defender Jarrad Branthwaite collided at full tilt, leaving Martinez in a bad way. He was stretchered off after 10 minutes on the deck.
Xabi Alonso confirmed he had gone to hospital conscious, and it was then reported that Martinez needed jaw surgery to correct a bone problem. Now, it is claimed that surgery took place on Saturday evening.
Argentine reporter CL Merlo confirms that Martinez had surgery last night and is now set for 40 days on the sidelines. It means the World Cup winner is likely to be out until the start of December.
“Dibu Martínez is being operated on RIGHT NOW for a jaw fracture and will be out for Chelsea and the Argentina national team for at least 40 days,” Merlo reported, just before midnight on Saturday evening.
Exactly 40 days from now is November 27, when Chelsea will play six times in all competitions. That run of games begins with Wednesday’s trip to Liverpool in the Cup, which Penders was likely to start anyway.
Next weekend, Chelsea face Man United at Stamford Bridge. The week after that, they face Sunderland – and then the November break kicks in. It looks likely Martinez will also miss out playing for Argentina.
Argentina play twice during the November break, two home games against Uruguay and Costa Rica. Leeds at home is next on November 21, before a trip to Forest on November 27 – 40 days from now.
It means Martinez’s next outing for club or country will be Chelsea’s home clash against Crystal Palace which is scheduled for December 2, as things stand. Reece James, meanwhile, could miss 17 more games.
