The tension surrounding Kevin Durant's departure from the Phoenix Suns has escalated beyond a dispute with team ownership, with Dillon Brooks seizing the opportunity to deliver a cutting insult aimed at his former trade counterpart.
Durant's relationship with Suns owner Mat Ishbia came under renewed scrutiny after the billionaire businessman acknowledged that acquiring the superstar in 2023 had been a mistake.
The comments prompted an angry response from Durant, now playing for the Houston Rockets, before Brooks joined the exchange with an Instagram post that appeared to question the impact the former MVP had on Phoenix's locker room.
Sharing a photograph of himself in a Suns uniform, Brooks wrote: "Thanks Matt for cleaning up that stench in the locker room before I came #culture."
The message, accompanied by 50 Cent's Back Down, made clear that the forward was not interested in staying out of the controversy.
The latest dispute began when Ishbia reflected on Phoenix's unsuccessful attempt to build a championship contender following Durant's arrival from the Brooklyn Nets.
Although Durant continued producing at an elite level, the Suns failed to achieve the postseason success expected from their expensive roster.
Durant subsequently challenged Ishbia's assessment on X, arguing that his individual performances had remained strong throughout his time with the franchise.
"#blameKD even though KD stayed on top of his game at 36 and got u back this 'culture' you love so much," Durant wrote.
He then made a remark seemingly directed at Brooks, referencing the Suns forward's DUI arrest earlier this year.
"Aye, Matthew acts like I got arrested for a DUI or sumn. Back to threads," Durant added.
Brooks responded with his Instagram message, reviving an antagonistic relationship that has produced several confrontations on the court.
Brooks was part of the blockbuster trade that sent Durant to Houston in 2025, with Jalen Green and draft assets also heading to Phoenix.
Since then, the two players have continued exchanging words during games, including a particularly heated meeting last season.
However, Durant previously insisted that Brooks' confrontational approach had little influence on his own performances.
"He don't get that type of credit with me," Durant said after one encounter. "Maybe some other guys that may turn up cause he talk to them, but he's not that important, especially with me to get me going."
Despite dismissing the significance of Brooks' comments, Durant acknowledged the forward's competitive approach.
"I respect Dillon. I respect what he brings to the game. I think that gets him going more than me," he added.
Brooks' latest remarks have heightened anticipation surrounding the upcoming meetings between Phoenix and Houston.
The teams are scheduled to face each other on November 7 in Phoenix before meeting again in Houston on November 25.
Their final regular-season encounter is set for February 5, providing another opportunity for the rivalry to continue on the court.
Durant hasn't publicly responded to Brooks' latest Instagram post, leaving the Suns forward with the final word in their most recent exchange.
With tensions involving the players and Phoenix ownership now spilling into public view, their first meeting of the season carries added significance beyond the result.
