It was scenes of jubilation in Lahore as Pakistan pulled off one of their finest ever wins in One Day Internationals. Dead and just about buried at 154/9 chasing 242 against England in their tri-series match in Lahore, Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf combined for a record-breaking partnership to seal a shock win.

Shadab played the kind of innings many believe his talent warrants. The all-rounder struck 113* off 96 balls batting at number eight, combining with Rauf (7* off 19 balls) for an unbroken 89-run stand that will be remembered for years to come.

In the match itself, England struggled to gain any momentum in their batting innings. Despite Ben Duckett producing a fine innings of 105 off 111 balls, England still fell to 187/8. Gus Atkinson’s 28-ball 36* at number 10 took Harry Brook’s team to a respectable 241.

But, that total looked more than enough as the bowlers tripped through the Pakistan lineup. The hosts lost their first three wickets within seven overs and were six down before the halfway mark. Things got worse soon after, falling to 122/7, 131/8 and 154/9, and the result looks a foregone conclusion.

However, Shadab Khan had other ideas. He took most of the strike and ate away at the target courtesy of a glorious array of pulls, sweeps, drives and cuts. There was a growing sense of belief as Pakistan got the target to under 50, and even more so with the required tally at just 22. Unbelievably, Shadab thought he was out LBW, cutting a dejected figure as he asked for a review. Replays showed a thin inside edge, and he and Haris Rauf couldn’t stop smiling.

The final few overs were chaos. There was a non-wide call, argument, missed run out and misfield as Pakistan edged closer. With three needed to win of 18 balls, Haris Rauf smashed a straight drive back past debutant Henry Crocombe to consign England to a second-straight loss in unloseable circumstances.

PAK vs ENG Tri-Series ODI, Lahore: Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf into the record books

“This is the last hope as far as Pakistan is concerned” said Roshan Abeysinghe on commentary when Salman Agha was dismissed for 26 to leave Pakistan reeling at 122/7 in the 29th over. No one could have imagined what would happen next as Shadab hit his first-ever hundred for Pakistan in any format.

Here are three incredible stats from an incredible match.

113*: Highest score batting at eight or lower in ODIs

Shadab’s 113* is the highest score by any player batting at eight or lower in ODIs. It is also the third century batting at number eight, after Ireland’s Simi Singh and Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz each hit 100* against South Africa (2021) and India (2022) respectively.

89: Highest 10th wicket stand in a successful chase in ODIs

The unbroken 89-run stand between Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf is the highest 10th wicket stand in a successful run chase in ODIs. Deryck Murray and Andy Roberts held the previous record for over 40 years, when they hit 64 for West Indies against Pakistan in the 1975 World Cup.

46.5%: Highest contribution from number 8 or lower in a win

Shadab Khan scored 46.5% of Pakistan’s 243/9. This is the highest percentage of a team’s total from number eight or lower that has resulted in a victory.

The highest overall is 46.88% by Chamika Karunaratne for Sri Lanka in 2022. Australia won that match by four wickets in Colombo.
