For several transfer windows now, dating back to Brendan Rodgers’ return in 2023, Celtic have signed some serious dross.

From Joel Mvuka to Marco Tilio, Celtic have done pretty well to sign abject player after abject player, but you can’t put Camilo Duran in that boat.

Despite Celtic’s issues this season, Duran has been one of the bright sparks, but Frank McAvennie fears that the versatile forward could leave as early as January if somebody comes knocking for his services.

Martin O’Neill has used Duran in various roles this season, and McAvennie thinks that could come back to bite Celtic in the back.

Here is how we think Celtic should line up against Besiktas. What changes would you make? There's no place for Callum McGrgeor 👀

Frank McAvennie explains why Camilo Duran could leave Celtic in January

McAvennie has been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons of late, given his comments about Celtic defender Auston Trusty.

That has made him a pretty unpopular figure, and you sense that his claim about Duran might end up in the same boat.

Duran is one of the first names on the teamsheet, and he is a player who many Celtic fans will agree has made a positive impact.

But one minute the Colombian international is starting on the right, and then he is played down the middle; either way, McAvennie told his Let Me Be Frank Podcast that it doesn’t fit well.

Simon Houston: “You have a concern as well for Duran, you were telling earlier on. You have a wee feeling that he might just decide at some point, ‘this isn’t for me.’”

McAvennie: “Listen, if you come over and somebody comes in for you in January. Are you going to go? Of course you are. He doesn’t know whether he is playing right. He doesn’t want to play right.”

Houston: “Obviously, Celtic aren’t going to sell him so quickly, but it’s when a player gets disillusioned.”

McAvennie: “When players start talking, at Manchester United at the moment, the players are starting to talk. Callum McGregor never says nothing. All of a sudden, he is questioning. We don’t know what we are doing he is basically saying.”

Duran’s roles at Celtic this season

Throughout pre-season, Duran played down the middle, with the now-struggling Kasper Hogh yet to arrive, and he scored in every game.

But with Celtic paying a club-record transfer fee for Hogh, he has mainly played as the striker, struggling and only scoring in one match this term.

As a result, Hogh has played on both flanks, down the middle, as well as playing right, left and centrally away at Ibrox.

Position Appearances Goals Assists
Centre-Forward 8 4 4
Right Midfield 5 4 1
Right Winger 5 3 0

To be fair to Duran, he has looked lively on the right flank, but it’s much better for the team if he stays down the middle.

If that means Hogh remaining on the bench, then so be it; Celtic can’t afford to be sympathetic and carry passengers anymore.
