On Sunday, the Houston Texans dropped to 2-5 after losing 27-21 to the New York Giants in overtime. After back-to-back wins over the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston lost a very winnable game against J.J. McCarthy, Cam Skattebo, and Co.
Now, entering their Week 8 bye, the Texans face an uphill battle to make the playoffs. Where does Houston go from here? Is head coach DeMeco Ryans on the hot seat? Can they turn things around and make a run in the second half of the season to secure a postseason berth? Pro Football Network’s analysts weighed in on Houston’s outlook.
“As we stand, this defense is the worst of DeMeco Ryans’ tenure as head coach, and for a defensive-minded head coach, that is never going to go down well with fans and the higher-ups within the franchise. Houston came into this game with a 14.7% chance of making the playoffs, and that was based on them being expected to win this game in 56% of scenarios. Their odds of making the playoffs will drop below 10% when all is said and done on the week, and the margin for error is next to nothing now. The only thing in the Texans’ favor is that they already have one win over the Jaguars and play them again later in the season.
“However, right now, even if the Texans are perfect the rest of the way, they still need the Jaguars to drop two more games. While that is not out of the question, it feels very unlikely with how things are leaving Week 7 that the Texans can finish 11-0. For every loss they have, they need to the Jaguars to have two more, and they must win that repeat matchup when they host the Jaguars.”
