When the Las Vegas Raiders named Kirk Cousins their starting quarterback, analysts wondered how long he'd manage to hold off No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. Well, Cousins is playing at a career-best pace and there's no reason to believe Mendoza will enter the lineup anytime soon. It's a testament to head coach Klint Kubiak and how he coaches offense.
Through eight weeks, Cousins ranks second among quarterbacks in touchdown passes with 19, behind just Joe Burrow (20). His 2,124 yards places third behind Jordan Love (2,246) and Matthew Stafford (2,146). Cousins is playing like a top-five quarterback in the league.
Extrapolating Cousins' current production throughout the course of a 17-game campaign places him on pace for 4,514 yards and 40 touchdowns. The former Michigan State standout has never had a 40-plus touchdown season throughout his 15-year career.
It's extremely rare for quarterbacks to have a career-best season at 38 years old and/or in Year 15. It speaks volumes of the miracles Kubiak is working with a Raiders offense that doesn't even possess a legitimate WR1 on the roster.
Cousins is operating Kubiak's offense at the highest level imaginable. The numbers are miraculous, and reflect excellently on Coach Kubiak.
