Arsenal handed perfect Premier League title boost after Mikel Arteta reaches new milestone
Mikel Arteta has enjoyed a near-perfect start to Arsenal's Premier League title defence

Arsenal left the Anfield pitch having taken a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, but more than that, they had sent yet another statement to their rivals that their title ambitions are even stronger than the year prior.

It had been 14 years since the Gunners had landed a gut-punch on Merseyside in the league; Mikel Arteta, famously, was in the team that had beaten the Reds last when Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla had put away their then Champions League qualification-chasing opponents.

The two sides have been transformed in the years since and were, for many, the league’s most likely candidates for this year’s title, in the potential absence of Manchester City, who await a reportedly severe punishment following the guilty verdict by the Independent Regulatory Commission relating to their financial breaches, subject to appeal.

However, this victory has put Liverpool nine points behind Arsenal, with Brighton and Hove Albion some rival fans’ last hope of stopping a first back-to-back title win for the Gunners since the 1930s. Mikel Arteta continues to set these new records and milestones to the delight of their supporters and the angst of their foes.

Liverpool became the fourth opponent to fall to Arsenal among the sides that Arteta’s team failed to topple in their title-winning campaign of 2025/26. Despite the Brighton loss at the AMEX coming after the narrow win last season, Arsenal have won at Villa Park, the Stadium of Light, the City Ground, and now Anfield, giving them a net positive of seven points from the same fixtures as last season.

When Arsenal lost to Brighton, the suggestions were that the Seagulls had squawked the perfect blueprint of how to beat this typically solid brick wall of a football team. Yet since then, only lowly Fleetwood Town have managed to win, and it took a penalty shootout, a major switcheroo of the eleven and immense fortune to avoid a comfortable Arsenal win and instead to make English football history.

The stars aligned for Fleetwood, but Arteta has made it so that the stars, planets, perhaps even galaxies, will have to rearrange themselves into some kind of giant arrow at David Raya’s top right corner in order for the red and white wall to be breached.

Combine this with Manchester City losing back-to-back games and their upcoming London lock-in after their trip to Newcastle whereby the Gunners will not leave the capital from November 22 through until January 15, barring an away tie in the FA Cup third round.

From the Community Shield, Arsenal have played 15 games across all competitions; only five of them have been at home. 12 wins have been secured, while the only draw came at Bayern Munich, where they again sent a clear message to the European elite that the Champions League is again a key target for this side.

And while records continue to be broken, and Arteta collects yet more firsts as manager, it bodes well that a first European Cup title and a first back-to-back Premier League crown could indeed be on the horizon for this incredible football team.
