NFL legend Robert Griffin III has slammed a college football star after he swiped at a female athletic trainer in a clip which went viral.
Kimari Robinson of Duke has sparked fury online following his behaviour towards Grace Dietrich in a game against North Carolina.
Dashawn Stone went down with an injury and was being treated by medical personnel.
A third member of staff joined the scene while Stone was lay on the turf and the woman made a normal move to get Robinson out of the way.
However, he reacted in an extremely angry manner - responding by swatting the trainer's arm and leaving her looking shaken.
The game was broadcasted live on ESPN and immediately the controversial incident picked up plenty of reaction.
Griffin, a Heisman trophy winner before he joined the NFL, was disgusted with what he saw and he quickly took to X to vent.
In a post which garnered two million views, Griffin wrote: "As a man, this just can’t happen. No excuses for it."
Online, many fans called for Robinson to be suspended for his conduct and one user was particularly annoyed by what happened.
She wrote: "Athletic trainers are first responders on the field. They stabilize spines, manage concussions, and literally keep players alive. They’re still among the least respected and lowest-paid people in the building, and they shouldn’t have to deal with players swinging on them for clearing space so medical staff can actually treat an injured teammate. That kind of reaction is just disrespect, and it’s one of the reasons so many ATs burn out and leave the profession. They don’t get paid enough for this."
Similarly, high school football coach Kevin Kelley felt that the antics from Robinson were well out of line.
He fumed: "This, @DukeFOOTBALL can’t happen. Check out the 7-9 second mark where the female athletic trainer tries to get the player hovering to move so she can help and he swings his arm at her. He needs to listen to her and know where he should be. If not where is the line?"
However, former football player-turned-sportscaster Jason Whitlock shared a different view and leaned towards siding with Robinson.
He commented: "What do we think here? I have mixed feelings. He's in a football game, concerned about a teammate and he gets pushed out of the way when he's doing nothing wrong. She's doing too much. She tried to manhandle him, he manhandled back. Ask him to back away, don't push him.
Duke lost 24-20 to North Carolina at the Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham. Stone was able to walk off the field without a stretcher needed.
There has been no official word from Duke as to whether Robinson will face any sanctions for the incident. The team's next game comes against Virginia.
