Bryson DeChambeau’s second major championship victory of his career at the US Open in 2024 was an incredibly emotional one for him.

DeChambeau lost his father 19 months before he won the US Open for the second time, so he was obviously very emotional after holing the winning putt.

The 33-year-old American may be a divisive figure among golf fans, but in that instant it was clear to see that his emotion was authentic.

Bryson DeChambeau fought off Rory McIlroy in seriously impressive fashion at Pinehurst two years ago.

What is your best ever score for 18 holes?

No, pitch and putt does not count!

However, he was still forced to hole a putt from around four feet to finish off the job, after a spectacular 50-yard bunker shot on the final hole gave him the opportunity to win his national championship for the second time in four years.

And while he was standing over the short putt, he told himself one very simple thing.

What Bryson DeChambeau told himself ahead of his putt to win US Open in 2024

DeChambeau sat down for an interview with Raj Shamani on his YouTube channel.

He was asked how much pressure he felt when faced with a short putt to win the US Open at Pinehurst in 2024.

“It was the mentality of being on the practice ground again. I’m just going to hit a shot like I always did growing up with my dad watching me,“ DeChambeau said.

“I went into a bubble, saying I’m gonna do it and I don’t care how it gets done. I’m gonna make it happen. I’m gonna make it happen.

“So I got over the putt and I’ll never forget this. I stepped over it, and I had been, you know, putting well all that week, obviously.

“I lined it up. I looked once, and in my head, all I said is, ‘It’s just, like on the practice green, just like you’ve done a thousand times’.

“I knocked it right in the hole. It was just a complete bubble mentality of focus, and I’ve done this thousands of times.“

Like many touring pros, DeChambeau practices his putting for hours on end when he’s not competing in tournaments.

The reason they do it is so that, when faced with a short putt in a pressure-packed situation to win a golf tournament, they know they have hit the same putt thousands of times before.

All of those hours of practice Bryson DeChambeau put in paid off when he won his second US Open title in 2024. Now he will be hoping to add to his major tally over the next few years.
