Ebou Adams scored a late winner as Portsmouth beat 10-man Sheffield United in a five-goal Championship thriller.

Zak Swanson opened the scoring in the first half with a thunderous strike from outside the box that nestled in the far corner of the net.

Moments later the Blades were reduced in numbers when Hamza Choudhury was shown a second yellow card and jeered off the Fratton Park pitch.

Adrian Segecic scored a second for Portsmouth after the break before goals from Japhet Tanganga and Tom Cannon drew Chris Wilder's depleted side level.

But Adams found the net with one minute of normal time remaining to earn Portsmouth a win that moves them up to 16th in the table, three points clear of the bottom three.

Swanson gave the game a perfect start when he sent a glorious right-footed effort from outside the left corner of the penalty box.

And the Blades were soon dealt a further blow when Choudhury received a second yellow card for a body check on Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and was sent off by referee Oliver Langford.

After the break Chelsea loanee Kavuma-McQueen ran half the length of the pitch after being slipped through, but with just the keeper to beat he struck his shot straight at Michael Cooper.

But just before the hour mark the 17-year-old winger was rewarded for his efforts in an energetic performance, beating his man down the left before fizzing a pass in to Segecic who netted from close range to double the Portsmouth lead.

Pompey seemed set to cruise to a comfortable victory but the Blades got themselves on the scoresheet minutes later when Tanganga swept Tahith Chong's cross from the left into the bottom corner.

With just over 20 minutes remaining Sheffield United levelled when Cannon headed Kalvin Phillips' cross in following a corner.

But their joy was shortlived as Adams, with one minute of normal time remaining, volleyed into the ground and the ball bounced up into the net before wheeling off in celebration in front of the Fratton End.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

"I'm obviously happy that we've won the game but the nature of it showed that we have a huge amount to learn and a long way to come.

"It's been a tough few days but we've managed to get three points which is the most important thing.

"Tonight the game was there for the taking as it was on Sunday but at times the decision making has not been quite right.

"I was furious at times through the game and I still am and I think the players are on the same page as me."

Blades boss Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"There were a number of decisions that incredibly frustrated me.

"I just think where are the young up and coming referees that should be refereeing in the Championship instead of the ones that just survive.

"They keep surviving and no doubt we'll have another survivor on Saturday, where's the quality?

"We feel a bit hard done by tonight and we were a threat, three goals in the last three games come from 25 to 30 yards and there was nothing Michael could do.

"The attitude of the team late on was so good and they fought for each other like mad, it's a tough one to take."
